I’m trying to plan ahead. My neutered boar is still in recovery but eventually he is going to live with my sows. My boar is coming up to a year old.

I’ve never put a boar with sows! I’ve always had bonded boars and a small herd of sows.

I need some advice...
1. How old should the sows be or does this not matter?
2. Would you start off bonding with one sow or put him in an established herd of two or three sows?

It's often not so much the age of the sows but their personality that indicates whether the bond will be successful. Your best bet is to contact a rescue who will organise the dating for you. Whether he bonds with a solo sow or a group of sows will depend upon how young and humpy he is and how established the sow hierarchy is, if they are a pair of sows. By using a rescue, you can see if the bond will work, so that you don't end up with additional piggies if you bring piggies home and then the bonding fails. My experience of neutered boar/sow bondings is that they can be just as temperamental to bond as all other bonds. (My own Ralph was a nightmare to bond - fortunately I am part of the rescue as we tried numerous sows with him before finding him a happy marriage).
