Needy Piiggy Box

I don't know if anyone uses newspaper under their bedding or not (though if you have birds this could also be useful), but I thought I'd share my idea since it is working so well for me. A few months ago I switched to newspaper and hay as bedding to try to help with my allergies. It's working out great. At first though I ran into a small problem. Our newspaper office "blew away" with the hurricanes last year and so there was nowhere to go get large amounts of old newspapers. Well after struggling to track down enough papers to clean my cages a couple times a week, I finally came up with a plan. I printed out a cute sign with piggies all over it that read "Piggies in need! Please donate your old newpapers here! We would be very thankful!" and pasted it onto the side of a cardboard box. I shipped it off to school with my mother and just about everyday the box fills to overflowing. It's working out WAY better than I expected. People don't really mind giving up their old papers after they are done with them, the trick is, finding a place where people have papers. Now I have plenty of newspaper. The other day I made a thank you card with each of the piggies' smiling faces on it and attached that to the box, too. Anyway, it may useful if anyone uses newspaper in their cages to make a needy piggy box of their own and place it in a school or hospital or something near you.

What a great idea. I use news paper under my vetbeds. my father and nan saves their newspaper for me. they buy about 5 newspapers a day. Also if i'm really low I go to the local newspaper company and see if they have any spare newspapers.

I use paper as the bottom layer too, always have... We're never short on paper. We have recycling boxes from the council and so if we never have enough then we can get the papers from neighbours! Like your idea though.

I always use newspapers and meadow hay for my pigs, and i find old people are the best in donating newspapers, my mum and dad go to Bingo and a weekly age concern meeting where they all know about my gang of 40 or so little fur balls they donate every week mum and dad bring them round on their way home ( they live across the road from me ) my hairdresser also get me papers from her customers, I always have a good stock and every so often mum takes photos of my babys in to show them what the papers are for, they take a good interest and always know if one dies or is ill, hubbys a driving instructor and often his pupils hear about my gang , MIck gets fed up telling them how they are all doing lol and often rings me up saying so and so wants to know how a certain pig is doing,

Wow what a fantastic idea! I bet the children at the school love the idea of helping out some furry piggies with their bedding dilemma hehe! My boyfriend gets people at his work to save their newspapers for us so we always have a good supply. The secretary kindly puts a few gossip magazines in there for me to read too ;D
