We visited the vet after we saw blood in Hoppsan's urine, and after one year, the vet can finally see a bladder stone through x-ray...

We were then prescribed Baytril(0.5ml/dosage, twice per day) to treat his possible infection in the bladder.

He absolutely hated Baytril, and after 5 dosages he became tired and miserable and stoped eating and drinking.

We were very worried and called the vet, the vet then agreed that we should stop giving him Baytril. Now he start to eat and drink, but way less than before. His droppings are small and weired shaped and sometimes with dried bubbles in it...

He was looking for paper roll to eat, so we guess he's trying to get more fiber. We heard about Benebac just yesterday but couldn't find it here in Sweden, what I did find is this probiotic called FibrePlex, I also read some posts here mentioning it but I thought I need more reassurance that this is the appropriate thing to use.

Please help!

I had Toast on Baytril and she absolutely HATED it. She wouldn't take it so I got her another antibiotic.
She was given Fibreplex to take at the same time and it was really good. Very easy to give as it wasn't watery, it was thicker so easy to eat.

Antibiotics can cause piggies to have bloat, which stops them eating and means they don't poo/or do small poos..
This happened with Toast so she was given a gut stimulate to make her poo which in turn made her eat again.

I feel aweful that I forced Hoppsan to take the meds as I thought it would do him good :( Should've called the vet after the first dosage!

Thank you for your reply though! I think I'll let him try fibreplex, hope he'll like it as well... he's 1.2kg, could you advise the dosage and how many times should we give to him per day? I believe it should only be given in a short period?

I was told 1ml per kg twice a day. My Toast is 1.2kg also so she got 1kg of probiotic 1 hour after she took her antibiotic (twice daily)
And yes ideally only for a short period of time

Gotcha! 1ml it is then! Thank you! :)

No worries :)
My other piggy loved it she used to lick it off Toast's mouth
I hope your little pig is feeling better

Hi!

Fibreplex is ideal; it also contains probiotics.

Please start topping him up with syringe feed and plenty of water asap. The output reflects what has gone into him a day or two before; he also sounds dehydrated (bubbles).
Weigh your boy daily at the same time (before his dinner is a good time) to check whether he is getting enough food to hold his weight.
Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

Guinea pigs whose guts have become unbalanced crave very rough fibre like cardboard etc. Please let him have brown cardboard, brown paper (any handles in bags cut through), kitchen or toilet roll inners.

Guinea Lynx :: Bladder Stones

Would you vet consider using sulfatrim (via an exotic animal medicines provider) instead? It is the new unflavoured 'animal' version of septrin/bactrim, which has been successfully used for few years for guinea pigs with bladder issues. It is generally less harsh on the guts as baytril. if your boy doesn't like it, then mix it with the same amount of fruit juice.

Thank you Wiebke! We got the Fibreplex and CC today, Hoppsan didn't like the gel texture, we had to dilute it with water and force it in with syringe. He hates me so much now and gave me a warning nib. :( I managed to gave him only 0.5ml instead of 1ml since he struggled sooooo much... But it seems like it worked! I can hear instant belly noise after the fibreplex!

He's now back to his house sleeping, I hope he'll eat more when he gets up.

We tried to trick him by putting meds on veggies, now he's very suspicious about veggies(which is really bad)...and he seems didn't care about juice...but force him with the syringe(one person grab him, another force the syringe into his mouth) feels so cruel, it breaks me to see him struggle~

I just want him to eat normal again, once he bounces back, we'll discuss sulfatrim with the vet. Thank you for the info! :)

Could you try juiced carrot instead of fruit juice? I know that it is a struggle, but you have to be tough in this situation and persist! In order to stay alive, a guinea pig needs 40-60 ml in 24 hours in syringe feed or solids and ideally 90-120 ml to keep their weight. He'll come back to eating veg once he realises that there is no horrible tasting baytril in it.
