Now what i have found out. When my 2 OAP sows were alive my boys fought and mounted the sows and each other when in the same run all the time.

The boars were separate from the girls and each other becuase of the fear one boar would kill the other boar. It got that bad.

Now that my 2 sows have passed to rainbow bridge. I decided to try them living together again and they are now best of friends and this has been since 8th feb when before they couldnt live 10minutes together in a hutch.

I personally think its the smell of females that makes boars become pests and beasts even though my girl were neutered. can anyone confirm this behaviour? They are like different piggies. There is about 8 weeks in age between them but the size different is huge. all is going well at mo.

Boars are just so different to sows. lol

I'd say definitely, the smell of sows can drive some boars mental, where others aren't bothered :)

yes id definately agree that having sows near boars can cause them to fight. I'm not saying every boar is like this but quite a few can be.

My boars are fine around my sows, that is until they go into season then all hell breaks loose!:)) Now I house the girlies in the bedroom for a few days until things simmer down.

It does the job and keeps the peace, I know the girls cycle like the back of my hand now!:))

I have to agree with you on that one!:(|)

Gotta love um thoughxoxo

Depends on the boars! Elmo and Hamish aren't bothered at all but my others will rumble and argue if they see the sows. They are used to the smell of them living above them now though.
Before I got the sows, they still rumbled etc..so I say its down to their personalities :))

I know what you mean, George is such a randy little thing, but Alfie really isn't fussed at all! But when the girls go into season, its Alfie that suffers as George doesn't give him a minutes peace, he'll be all over Alfie like dog on heat! Hence the girls in the bedroom for a few days, but it works for them, then know one gets all het up.:))

Agree with everyone, my boars vary. Dumb question - how do you know when your girls are in season, then I will know if behaviour changes at this time. Haven't really noticed any behaviour changes so far, and they are all very close. xx

Well, for my girls, it happens every 16-19 days. I first notice them being abit moody and snappy with each other. Then comes the rumbling and rubbing themselves up against the bars of their cage.

And eventually, they will have a go at mounting each other, sometimes resulting in a nasty spray in the facerolleyes.

Then, George gets a sniff of the action and away he goes, Alfie just tries to keep out the way bless him:...

Hope that helps :)

Actually now you say it like that, I have noticed that sort of behavious, except for the mounting, with my girls. It never has any effect on the boys though and there are 6 sharing the room with them at the moment. Thanks. x

The girls are living above the boys, so all the action is going on above their heads, so theres no getting away from it really:))

In answer to the original question, yes, females can definately hurt a boar friendship. If you must keep both, try handling the boys before the girls as just a faintest whiff of female can send them into a hormonal frenzy, and I've seen some nasty bite wounds resulting from this.

Personally, I just keep boys, I love them, but they still find occasion to fall out sometimes, even without the smell of girls!

Interesting posts about the girls cycles of season by the way :)
