I have several questions...

-My piggies hutch turned over in the night. The side with the opening doors on was facing the floor. My piggies are pretty shaken, but my mum says there's no point to keeping them inside for a few days, and that there's no point going to the vet. Is there anything I can do to calm them down?

-I have two piggies. Tobii and Rocket are brothers. I got them when they were ten weeks old, so now they're 10 months 2 weeks. Tobii is rather relaxed and calm, unless you disturb him while he's eating/sleeping/relaxing. Rocket is a different story. He freaks out over everything and won't let anyone near him. Unless he is really shaken up/scared/hungry he won't go near anyone. The first time he cuddled me was this morning when his hutch tipped over and he was scared. What can I try to get him used to being handled? I've tried putting him in towels, speaking softly, tempting him with fod everything..

-I'm terrified of putting my piggies outside this summer. I've heard about flystrike and mites being a bigger threat outside, and don't want them to suffer. I also don't want them to overheat, as my back-garden is sunnier than a beach. Where could I place them where they won't be at risk of this, or what can I do to prevent it? Seeing as they aren't allowed inside, I'm pretty stuck.

-And finally, I'm concerned about their weight. To me, they seem pretty big/heavy, and the vet said they were the best piggies he's ever seen. But when I put them on the scales this morning, Tobii was 763grams and Rocket was 794grams. For their age, this is rather small. Should I be concerned?

Heya,
sorry to hear about your piggies scare. I'd keep a close eye on them.
I cant comment on the weights of your piggies but a vet would know best so if he says they are in great shape id have thought they were.
how much do they get fed?

My piggies get a frozen bottle of water in their cages in the summer as coolers. you can buy pads that stay cool for hours. these would be ideas to cool piggies down.
but id say outdoors was better providing they have shade? as they get air and a breeze if there is one.

as long as they are cleaned our regulary and you use a good santitizer they should be happy and healthy.

as for the jumpy piggie some are like this. my tallulah has only just started calming down and relaxing when i walk near and i have had her for 8 months. some take longer...

keep us posted xx

Thankyou for your help :D I used a frozen water bottle last year and they loved it! I'll definately use that again.

As for the tipped-over hutch, all is well now. The hutch has been 'relocated' and the piggies are perfectly happy, popcorning all over the place! :)

Tobii and Rocket could eat forever. I don't let them though! They get a bowl of celery and lettuce for breakfast - around 8am - and a bowl of Wagg Guinea Pig Crunch mixed with veg for tea - around 8pm. They often go out in the run for an hour or two, and the run is moved every other day. That way they can't eat all the grass ;)

My dad had this 'brilliant' idea for the winter. He bought a fishing tent, and we moved all the piggies stuff and hutch into it. It's very clean, not damp and very spacious. I'll take some pictures soon, oh actually hold on I have a few here...

This is an average meal for my piggies.

The inside of the hutch, this was after cleaning out and was outside.

Tobii and Rocket 'sharing' some food. This was a few moments before cleaning.

As you can see, they're happy piggies :P

Once agin, thankyou for your help ;) It's much apreciated.

I weighed Garry and Minty this morning - Garry was 992g and Minty was 964g...they are both19 1/2 months old. They were P@H piggies and I they'll always be small piggies, I believe due to inbreeding. Still, it's whatever suits the pig's frame really, just as we all vary in weight and size.

Hmm, yes, inbreeding can have those kind of effects. Well, I cleaned Tobii and Rocket's hutch out again today. I didn't do a total cleanout, so the hutch didn't get drenched in discinfectant. That's more of a weekly job.

Hehe, I just read the back of the My Little Friend Softwood Bedding packaging, and it says 'Will do 12 rabbit hutches or 48 gerbil cages.' mallethead I don't quite think so, I go through two bags a month, and they're big bags!

Settled the boys down now and they are happily munching on some celery and Wagg Piggie Crunch. Nighty night my baby boys..x)
