Hello everyone,

Whilst spot-cleaning the hutch tonight I noticed that Crumble’s left eye was slightly closed over and not as open/alert as her right. So I scooped her up and saw that it was slightly swollen above her eye socket. There doesn’t appear to be any unusual discharge from the eye but I’m just a bit worried. She seems pretty fine in herself, in that she’s moving about and eating normally, but she was shying away a little from the other piggies if they got too close to her left eye.

It’s currently late and only the emergency vets is open tomorrow. Is it best to just monitor it and see how she gets on? Or should I book an appointment asap?

Thanks in advance.

Eyes can deteriorate quickly, so I would book an appointment asap.
The good news is that most eye issues are fairly straightforward to treat when caught early, so a regular vet will be fine.
I’ll give the vet a call tonight to see if they can fit her in tomorrow, I can’t stand the thought of her being in any pain.

Please see the emergency vet tomorrow. Guinea pig eyes are the same as cat and dog eyes (including antibiotic eye drop brands; it's usually isathal, or chloramphenicol if things are really bad), so any halfway decent general vet should be able to deal with it.
With an eye problem, it is more important to get any potential injury or infection without any bleeding seen promptly (i.e. ideally within 24 hours) than seeing a piggy savvy vet. Potential eye injuries are prioritised in the UK and will be squeezed in if at all possible.
