Hi

My guinea pig's companion Chutney died about 3 months ago and we have been looking for a companion for him ever since. He is an alpha guinea pig so needs a laid back guinea pig, perhaps a baby as a companion. He is 3 1/2 years old and unneutered so we need a boar. He never bit or attacked Chutney, just showed him who was boss. We would like to take him to meet potential partners to see if they get on.

Any suggestions gratefully received:)

Also we live in Leeds, West Yorkshire

You have 2 rescues fairly close. Bramley Animal Rescue, Leeds & Millhaven, Keighley. Their contact details are on the Vet Locator at to of page. You need to see it they will let you take Gizmo in to boar date to see if you can find a compatible companion. Good Luck.

I would recommend to go "boar dating" at one of our recommended good standard rescues. They are run by experienced people who offer bonding at the rescue under expert supervision, so Gizmo will only come home with a new boarfriend if there has been success. Thus you do not run the risk of ending up with two boars that don't get on. You will also always have the rescue to fall back on in case things go wrong down the line.

I can recommend most warmly Milhaven in Keighley but also BARC in Barnsley; both are very good with boar bonding.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately Bramley Cavies has closed down and Millhaven don't have any suitable guinea pigs with him being dominant. Haven't tried Barnsley yet though:)

If you struggle to find a male friend through dating, you could consider having Gizmo neutered so he can live with a sow or two after a 6 weeks post op wait. I know that Barnsley have neutered some of their boars, so they should be able to point you to a good neutering vet if the boar dating fails. Cross gender bondings are the most stable of all. Some of my "husboars" have been neutered because they failed to bond with other boars.
