Just been reading about pigs that have been housed on this and some have sadly died because it contains euclyaptus and other things.

Just thought I'd give a heads up this is one NOT to use.

I know of a person who used this bedding & quite a lot of healthy piggies died. On further research she found eucalyptus is toxic to piggies :(

I would contact the manufacturers and ask what they use to fragrance it. :)

Thats sad :-\
Might be an idea to ask a mod to sticky that info Louise, so it doesnt get lost over time?

This is its website so i guess nedz and bliss are the same :)

might be a good idea to switch bedding then O0

ive never seen either of these

I'm sure i spoke to a person who does aromatherapy and she used to run a guinea pig rescue and has finished rescuing now but still has a few oldies in her back garden and she used to use eucalyptus on her guinea pigs to massage them :-\

I'm not going to switch bedding until i know for certain whats in it and i have been using it for years now and had no problem so i dont see why i should :)

Peter Gurney recommends vicks for poorly pigs in his book piggie potions. Doesn't vicks contain eucalyptus? He's meant to be an expert, surely he wouldn't recommend it if it was dangerous? :-\

Personally I wouldn't use Vicks either. Anything that smells that strong to me is likely to smell a whole lot stronger to my piggies, be it Vicks or a type of bedding.

ILA - it would be a shame to have to have one of your pigs become ill before you realised there was something up with the bedding.

I'm going to drop Chrissie an email and see what she thinks about this one as she has the most experience I know out of anyone regarding essential oils and piggies.

OK, got a reply from Chrissie. She said she would never recommend a bedding containing essential oils - particularly not Eucalyptus as it's "one of the harshest oils around" (quote unquote). She made the point that a horse's nose is high above their bedding most of the time whereas a guinea pigs tummy and nose is right up against it all day long.

Interestingly, she made a comment about someone who had kept their pig on lavendar scented bedding for a while, the pig suddenly had a violent reaction to it and nearly died. Proof indeed that just because you've used something for a while, doesn't make it safe.

She also contributed to an article online on bedding and makes a wonderful point on skin sensitisation - an allergic reaction is NOT an immediate thing -

"Skin sensitisation is caused when a chemical allergen (such as fragrance oil) provokes an immune response which shows up as inflammation of the skin. This often happens if the skin has been exposed to the allergen for sufficient time to cause contact dermatitis. The greater the exposure to an allergen, the more serious the immune response will be. So, if a guinea is living in a cage surrounded by scented shavings all day long, an allergic reaction is likely to happen sooner or later given their close proximity to the ground and the enclosed nature of the cage. " - http://community.icontact.com/p/pla.../newsletter/posts/planet-guinea-which-bedding

So the longer a pig is exposed to these things, the more violent their reaction will be.

I don't use fragranced things We even swapped to non bio washing powder for the dog!
But anything for the Guineas is as simple and untreated as possible
Same with the dogs and fish!

Have used Nezbed pro for several months no problems.Dont know how it differs from Nezbed.
