Hi all,

Our little (big) Eugene has been to the vet today after I noticed a lump under his chin. The vet found that there were actually 2 lumps, one that is moveable and likely an abcess (it has already started to come to the top) and another that he thinks is attached to the jaw. He told us to go home and think about either leaving it and monitoring, having a needle biopsy or surgery but warned us of the risks of anaesthesia. We think we are going to go with the biopsy but was just wondering if anyone has experience of the jaw abcess and if this is likely to become a chronic issue or if it is something that can be monitored and only interfered with if the piggie becomes poorly? The vet was brilliant but we are feeling slightly unsure of what it actually is. Eugene is only 2 and so far seems perfectly happy, eating and drinking normally and being his usual funny self. The lump is noticeable and it’s making us sad to look at him especially as he seems happy ☹️. We would obviously like to avoid surgery where possible but will do whatever he needs to get better. He has had a little sebaceous cyst before so maybe he is just prone to these kinds of things but obviously if it’s related to his jaw or teeth then it’s a lot more serious, the vet even mentioned possible lymphoma. We just aren’t really sure what to do and would love to know what other people in this situation have done. Picture of our lovely boy for attention (please don’t mention his eye this is also being monitored by the vet) xx

So sorry to hear your little Eugene is having issues. My 🌈 piggie Dexter also suffered with abscesses (3 in total) that were all surgically removed however, they were complications after surgery. Unfortunately, I do not have any advice but want to send you and Eugene my best wishes.

Further to my post last night, one of Eugene’s abscesses has decided to burst today. I did ask the vet about this yesterday and he said just to clean it, and I just rang the emergency vet but you just speak to a receptionist who isn’t knowledgeable like the usual receptionists and told us to come in. The consultation fee alone is £136 🙃 so we aren’t sure what to do as we don’t have a lot of money and I’m worried that if we pay this we won’t be able to afford the original treatment that we were going to go ahead with. We’ve got Hibiscrub at home so will this be ok until tomorrow? If it was on his back or something I wouldn’t be as worried but the abcess is under his chin near the floor and had hay stuck to it this morning so I’m worried about it getting dirty. We will be home all day today so can monitor him and will obviously take him in if he starts to become unwell but I don’t know if it’s worth spending that much for the vet just to clean it out. The usual consultation fee is £47 lol. Any help is very much appreciated

I can’t offer advice but want to offer support.
Abscesses are no fun.
I was prescribed Hibiscrub for one of my piggies who had a nasty abscess some years ago.

Hello. I’m sorry your piggy has an abscess. I have dealt with a tooth root abscess with my piggy Pepper
last year. I would say you are ok to leave it overnight and see the vet tomorrow. Give it a good clean this evening. Here is his thread. It’s full of helpful advice from everyone on here.

Dental? Pepper is off to the vets tomorrow

In my experience if the abscess is large then it probably won’t go away on its own and will need to be marsupialised (stitched open) and flushed twice a day for at least two weeks. Zithromax is a great antibiotic for abscesses. Pepper is ok now so no long term affects. He lost a bottom tooth but is managing fine with three incisors.

If you live close to Northampton I’d recommend seeing Simon and Kim Maddox at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic They are absolutely amazing. Good luck.

Thank you. He saw the vet today and they have flushed out the abcess so we will see how he goes. He also unfortunately has another large lump under his neck which we are probably going to get biopsied but it is so expensive 😩. We are in Portsmouth but our vets seem very knowledgeable so I’m confident they will do their best for him.
