Hi everyone,

I’m wondering if anyone can give any advice on how to go about nebulising antibiotics?

I currently have 3 sick pigs all showing signs of a URI, I took them into the vets last week and was prescribed a 0.6ml dosage of baytril 2 times daily for all 3 of them (they all weigh around 1-1.2kgs)

About 3 days in to the course, I noticed that the baytril was really affecting their appetite even though I had been giving them a probiotic along side the baytril. Overall, all 3 of them seemed far worse than before they started the treatment so I asked my vet if I could switch to another antibiotic. They are now on 0.3ml of Sulfatrim 2 times daily and have been for 7 days. I’m not convinced that the Sulfatrim is working as they are still all looking pretty miserable, they are definitely better than what they were on Baytril but are still pretty lethargic. I’m having to syringe feed them all as their appetite still isn’t great, but this is starting to become a bit stressful so I really want to try my best to get them feeling better and starting to eat for themselves again.

I know that Baytril covers a lot more bacteria than Sulfatrim so my gut feeling is that to really beat this URI, they need to be on baytril. Obviously, I’m pretty apprehensive about this as they reacted so badly to it last time so I’m wondering if nebulising the baytril could be more effective and kinder on their guts. Does anyone have experience on nebulising antibiotics that they could share with me? I’ve had to deal with my fair share of sick pigs over the years but this is completely new territory for me. I will obviously consult with my vet before going ahead but I’m just looking for any advice/knowledge on it beforehand.

Thanks!
