Hi everybody!
I am new to this website and i don’t really know how to use it so i may just be talking to myself right now🙂
I have 2 female guinea pigs which i got about 2 weeks ago, they are doing really well. However they haven’t really trusted me yet (other than giving them food!)
These are my first guinea pigs and i don’t want to stress them out by clipping their nails but they are getting quite long. Taking them to a vet is very expensive so i’m not really sure what I should do. They will not let me pick them up yet and they are still quite skittish (i’d also like to not get bit if i can!😄)

Thank you!

It can take lots of time for them to get used to being handled but they may never like being cuddled so getting them used to being handled for those weekly health checks is important even if they don’t let you cuddle them
This guide is for how to pick up and weigh piggies (weight checks need to be done weekly) and the same techniques for herding into a carrier applies to picking them up for nail clipping and other weekly health checks.

Guide to Cutting Guinea Pig Nails

If you aren’t confident in doing it yourself, then it is best to have a vet nurse do it or show you how to do it until you feel confident enough to do it yourself.

Piggies are expensive pets to keep and vets arent cheap, so if you havent already, then it can be very helpful to set up a vet fund - an account you save into regularly so you don’t have to worry when unexpected vet visits are needed as they invariably do! Out of hours emergencies can often run over £100 just for the consultation
