Hi all, my pig's nails are getting very long and I don't know whether I could cut them myself or go to a vet. What do you recommend?

If you are unsure or if you've never cut nails before then I would see a vet. There the vet can help you do it and show you how best to attempt it the next time it needs doing.

That being said feel free to try yourself- though with black nails where the quick isn't clear I would be extra careful. Shining a light on a black nail should reveal the quick. Be prepared for a pig to squirm (I recommend getting someone to help you- either they hold the piggy and you cut or vice versa) when I do Mo's I always have a bottle of cucumber close by for him to chew rather than my finger! Lol

If you want to do it yourself you could always wrap them up tight in a towel with the foot out and cut the nails, unwrap them pull out another foot, wrap them back up and clip the nails and repeat until all of them are done. I have to do this with Christian and Tom has to hold him.

I took my two to the vet the first time (and many more times) to get their nails trimmed so they could show me how to do it and the vet nurse was happy to. It took me a little over a year to pluck up the courage to do it myself. I think I was more nervous than the piggies as they turned out to be little troopers. There are also tutorials on piggie nail clipping on youtube.
