This morning I’ve noticed Machu was kind of hopping about on his back legs and was walking a bit strangely and doing some odd things. I took him to the vets and they’re as confused as me. They did some reaction tests and he didn’t blink when she was going as if to poke him in the eye and he just seemed very ‘away with the fairies’ she looked in his ears and one he was really NOT happy about letting her touch. It had quite a lot of gunk in apparently but no mites. The response in one of his back legs was delayed when she put him on the edge of the table.

They gave him an injection of anti biotics and pain relief in the vets and some metacam and baytril to take home and said to see how he goes and if no better can refer him to a piggy specialist in a neighbouring town.

So basically they’re as confused as me and I’m very worried about him that it could be something neurological.

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear this.
Sending hugs to you and healing wheeks to Machu

Lets hope the antibiotics clear up whatever is going on with Machu. Its a worrying time when our piggies aren't right and we and the vet don't know what's happening. It was the same with Rainbow Piggy Shy Little Meg so I took her to C&R during Lockdown. Kim discovered that she some neurological issue going on with the side of her face as she didn't blink one eye, she had a slight heart murmur, she had a tooth spur that had lacerated the inside of her cheek and she had arthritis of the spine! So a lot going on. Are you able to get Machu referred to the C&R?

Sorry to hear this. Hopes you can get to the bottom of what’s causing the issue.

He’s banging into things in his cage and still walking very strangely 😫😫 I’m very worried. He seems quite sleepy too.

What’s the process for getting referred to C&R?

You need to ask your vet to refer you I think. It was such a long time ago that I took Meg may be one of the others can help? @Gem789 takes her piggies there. You could phone them up and ask them.

I think you can ring up and register if they're still taking on new clients but the previous vets will have to email over her details. If they're not taking on new clients then yes the vet will have to refer. They are very busy all the time so I'm not sure what the situation is at the moment.

@furryfriends (TEAS) Debbie,do you know if the cat and rabbit are taking on new clients?

I think I would ring and ask if they are taking on new clients and if not get your vet to refer you.Ive been to many different vet practices and the cat and rabbit clinic is the only one i would say I trust them 100 percent with anything they've said.

Sorry that Machu is unwell.
It’s frustrating when we don’t know what is wrong.
If you can’t get into C&R there are some other very good exotic specialists around, depending on where in the UK you are.

Hopefully the antibiotics and Metacam will do the trick.

We’ve had him looked at by an exotics specialist and we’re still not sure. He’s had samples taken from his ear to see if we can tell anything from that. If not, we’ll have to explore the CT scan route to get a good look at what might be going on. He’s now on stronger Metacam, gabapentin, Baytril and ear drops. 😢😢
