So my beautiful boy gizmo died on Monday, from bladder sludge/ongoing bladder issues.
last night my remaining boy Gilbert didn’t eat his veggies or this morning so I syringe fed him emeraid straight away and again before lunch. I’ve taken him to the vets and they can’t find anything wrong as yet, he had a runny nose/watery eyes on Wednesday but that seemed to be a ‘one off’. She said his lungs were clear. I asked her to check his teeth as he seems to be chewing slowly, she couldn’t get a good look due to there still being emeraid in his mouth. - this was 2-3 hours after I last fed him. He seems to have a touch of bloat. Only passed 3 small poo’s and god knows if he’s passed urine. I couldn’t get hardly any fluid into him and his temp was 36.9 she wanted that to be higher. Any thoughts guys? Could this be him pining for his companion? I’m awaiting an update from the vet on what they’ve done and how he is, I’ve asked them to give him some vitamin c or at least some probiotics of some sort... they plan on giving him gut stimulants and pain relief and s/c fluids and warm him up a bit and feed him.

Hope he starts feeling better soon. I’ve no idea I’m afraid. 🤞🏾

Hi!

HUGS

I am every so sorry that you are dealing yet again if another emergency so soon after Gizmo. What a horrible time for you!

Unfortunately, we won't be helping you and your emotional wellbeing by throwing wild guesses into the ring; the field is unfortunately a bit too wide for anything else. :(

Fingers very firmly crossed.

Thank you everyone, still not got a firm diagnosis however the vet feels he has picked up a little, he’s eaten some ‘greens’ given him recovery feed and they think he’s taking it quite well, had some fluids, started him on a gut stimulant, pain relief and are going to start doxycycline to cover for a possible URI. She said there was no bloat (thank god) and he’s not in pain when examined (so don’t really understand why the pain relief is needed). only problem is he hasn’t done a poo yet, the Vet spoke so quickly that I didn’t get chance to ask about wether he’d had any vitamin c or probiotic. He will need that if starting antibiotic won’t he?

Sorry I can't offer any advice, I am not qualified to do that, but all I can offer you is a virtual hug and healing vibes for Gilbert. I do sincerely hope he recovers. Keep us updated.
RIP Gizmo x

Hi everyone, I’m in a bit of a pickle here. So Gilbert is still in hospital being treated for a URI, he’s on 5 different meds and is now eating a bit for himself, he has lost 30g in the last day. They are going to keep him in today/tonight then maybe discharge him tomorrow. -they are going to start him on saline nebs today to help with his blocked nose. He needs feeding 3hourly.

my pickle is that I am pregnant and they want to induce my labour this weekend. I'm not going to be able to care for him, shall I send him back to the vets or is there a rescue that can help with his care for a short while? Or even is anyone on here able to Help look after Gilbert? I know it’s a long shot I'm panicking a little, I live in Leeds West Yorkshire.

So sorry to hear about Gilbert, and your situation. I wish I could do more to help!

Just wanted to let you know that the boys and I are sending love to you all. Hope Gilbert starts to improve and I hope all goes well for you and baby 💗

Oh gosh. I wish I was closer I would offer to help
in a heartbeat, how worrying for you.

thank you, I really need some advice on what to do with him. How long does it take for piggy’s to improve after a URI? They are talking about continuing the meds for two weeks atleast.

The feeding, giving meds and cleaning his eyes and nose I can do but not through the night, then all efforts are wasted then as he will loose weight overnight and not improve.

the problem is his nose is so blocked it takes an hour to feed him each time because he takes it so slowly, how much shall I be giving him at each session? I was giving him 20mls of emeraid sustain (did two feeds on Sunday) before he went into hospital, he lost 40g on Sunday night and 30g last night so to me he needs more feeding? they said he’s starting to eat a bit on his own but have never been able to tell me what he’s had, I don’t know if he’s eating hay, he is passing poo but they are very small ones.

Shall I post something in the ’guinea pig in need and welfare‘ section on here or is that not the right section To post in about this?

Could Millheaven Guinea pig rescue help? They do boarding, they are in Keighley.

Hi, so he’s home picked him up on Wednesday. Since then his weight has increased by 20g per day his poos are still small and he’s not eating much veg. He seems to be most active (and eating for himself) around 15.30 and has all his meds at 10 and 22. I’m wondering why he’s not got much of an appetite? We are syringe feeding crit care every 3 hours but not at night, so he goes from 11pm till 6 without our help. I’m thinking maybe it’s because he’s recently bereaved and there’s no competition for food? Any thoughts?
