Hi all

The other night Tilly started making what I can only describe as a canary sound. Very high pitched squeeking/whimpering. It was really strange. She did it for about 5 minutes and after that was fine. she hasn't done it before and hasn't done it since. Having said that, when we took Gizmo to the vets (she has bruised her little leg), she gave out an almighty bark at the vet. so perhaps Gizmo wants to be a dog and Tilly wants to be a canary.:{:{:{

Would be greatful to hear your views on odd piggy noises.-c

PS
Gizmo's poorly leg has unfortunately meant she has had to pull out of the OlmyPigs:(|)

This sounds like the "piggy song" Some say piggies make this noise when they are sad, others say it's when they are happy.

None of mine have ever "sang" but i took 2 piggies in from freecycle & 1 of those did it at 4am one morning. They were rehomed but are holidaying with me this week & when i'm giving veggies to my lot (they are in a shed next door) Squeak starts to "sing" she does it very quietly & stops as soon as i take their veggies in :)

One of mine was singing at midnight the other night. I've no idea which one it was as I have 17 and they live outside. I was not getting out of bed to find out! They always stop when they hear you coming anyway. I've had some do this before, always in the middle of the night. I've no idea why they do it, but it is an incredible noise to hear.

Thanks for that. I think she may have been a little sad as Gizmo was obviously stressed at havin ghurt her leg.:(

You are very lucky to hear this - a lot of people don't. In all my years of having guinea pigs I've only ever heard one pig make this sound and it's one that I have now called Iggy. I was in the kitchen and all of a sudden heard this noise and I was convinced a bird had flown in and got trapped behind Iggys cage. I crept closer and realised that it was Iggy making this noise.:o She wasn't in any distress and looked quite happy.:)

I've looked on the internet andsome people say it means they are very happy and others say it is a distress call or a mating call.
One site had a sound clip and said if you play it to the pigs they will run straight into their houses and hide as it is a danger iminent call.....so i played it and that is exactly what they did. So i think this is generally a bad thing! Having said that it was night and there was no threat whatsoever. very strange:{:{:{

One of my guinea pigs sings every so often. OH told me he heard her sing last night and that it was a lot louder and longer than usual. I was fast asleep and didn't hear a thing :0

The first time we heard Chloe sing, we were filing some wood and it sounded as she was trying to imitate the sound of the filing (I first thought the sound came from OH and thought he was mocking my effort at filing the wood down for the guinea pig ramp). She might have been annoyed that day by the noise we were making. But usually when she sings she doesn't seem to be upset. She certainly didn't make that noise when Maya was ill & died... so I don't think it is death related.

She's quite a musical pig and really enjoys listening to certain types of music. She was absolutely fascinated when I played her a Tibetan relaxation CD. I think she eventually got bored as I made her listen to it every day :)

I don't think she does it when she is sad (don't see why she would be sad at night after filling her tummy with nice food and having a clean cage) or happy and it doesn't seem to be a warning. Maybe she's just very artistic and just enjoyes singing ?/
