hi all, this is my first post I'm utterly desperate so thanks in advance to anyone with any advice.

My pig who is about 2 and a half suddenly stopped eating and drinking almost 2 weeks ago. Ive been to the vets with him several times as he seemed to have trouble getting food down. He's still interested in the food but cant seem to chew it. The vet has since filed down the molars but only through desperation as she wasnt convinced this was the cause. That was a week ago. He is still bright when let out for a run but we're still syringe feeding him.

It looks like there might be a blockage in his throat as he cant swallow anything solid. Little pieces of apple of lettuce he will try to chew and then bring back and it drops out of his mouth. He's lost a lot of weight and I'm so so worried. The vet is out of ideas and so am i :(

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Hi there and welcome :)
You really need to speak to a piggie savvy vet, someone who really feels comfortable with them, can you tell us where you are, there's people from all over the world here perhaps we can help you with a vet in your area :)
Does sound like teeth tho, i've been having this problem for more than 6 months at least so i can help a little, i do wish you luck :-*
What's your little man's name :)

hi and thanks :)

the little guy is called blot and i live in newcastle upon tyne. Ive tried having a look on the net and cant really seem to find any vets myself.

The other thing i didnt mention is we have seen some bits of hay etc still in his throat that dont seem to go down its as if something is blockin it :(

Umm can you see a vet asap?
Darling Blot you need to tell your mummy what is wrong with you :(
Gosh i'm sorry i can't help you, i'm hoping somebody will come on real soon to help you :)
Best of luck :-*

i keep asking him but he wont tell me!
The vet said last time i took him that the steriod (which she gave him then) didnt work she was out of ideas :-\ she gave a steriod in the hope that if there was swelling in his throat it might reduce it.

I just dont know what to do!
thanks for trying and your concern :) its appreciated

How about giving Vedra at the CCT a call to see if she can help or recommend a vet/rodentologist near you? Her number is contained within the sticky at the top of this board.

Welcome by the way!

welcome to the forum, I have jsut lost artie for same reason he had 2 abcesses in his throat area which although removed he died 2 days later, so get it looked into quickly he also had a swollen gland in his throat which in hindsight makes me think it was blocking the throat, good luck

I know theres a good guinea vet in south shields if you can get there. I think he does a couple of days at a surgery in sunderland as well. I'll see if I can find the details for you.

blot is getting an x-ray tomorrow so hopefully that will show something. Ill keep you informed :)

and thanks for the heads up about south shields :) the details will be greatly appreciate too!

Good Luck for tomorrow Blot & hope you're soon feeling better :)

well its no longer a mystery and i absolutely gutted. It seems blot's toungue as grown into and joined to his mouth. The vet was a small animal specialist and she's convinced if she operates it'll just grow back together again.

She says that the fairest thing to do is put him to sleep, its hardest decision i've ever had to make for a pet, i just wondered if any of u had heard or seen anything liek it before?

thanks :'( :'( :'(

This sounds very very odd... If I was you, I would def. double check with Vedra from the CCT... the amount of rubbish we were told by so called "expert" vets is unbelievable... and cost the life of two of my piggies.

Its just a phone call, and she might have other ideas, or might have even heard of a similar case before and can tell you if there really is no hope, or if there is something that can be done. Id do it for the sake of your piggy.

Good luck!

thank you all for your advice, unfortunatley i was already at the vet at the time of your posting Abnoba.

Blot has been put to sleep, it seems there was an inch on both sides of his toungue had basically grew into his mouth sides. There was no hope for the poor little guy he had lost so much weight and even with our best efforts to syringe feed him, we still couldnt fatten him up.

It was no way for him to live after all piggies love to eat practically more than anything!

I'm just glad he's not in trouble and resting now.

thank you all again for your kind words and help i really really appreciate it.
