Hi! I recently bought a two guinea pigs and one of them have crusties around one eye, not both. He is fine otherwise and I think this has been a problem for a while (even before I bought him, because in the photo the previous owner had on him he had the same thing around the same eye). I was wondering what it might be? Should I call the vet? He eats and drinks normal amounts and is up and about.
thanks

I would take to vets and get both piggies a good mot. . That way you be able to fix her eye which needs vets help.
If you bought piggies from a shop or store they should know better. .and if sold with this condition they are responsible.
If private then the piggies need your tlc.
Welcome to the forum. There are tons info on here for you and piggies.

Hi!

Please see a vet. Any eye problem should always be seen promptly because eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly and may at the worst end up with needing an eye removal operation. The more quickly you see a vet, he greater your changes of a quick and straight forward recovery.

If your piggy has come with the problem, then you can reclaim the vet cost from the seller as part of your customer rights for having been in effect sold faulty ware. The longer you wait, the less you can prove that the seller is at fault.
New guinea pigs: Sexing, vet checks&customer rights, URI, ringworm and parasites

Thick yellowish/greenish/orangey around the eyes and nose are a symptom of an advance un- or undertreated respiratory tract infection, which can be fatal or cause permanent damage in the airways.

Any transparent crusts are a sign of a persistent irritation in the eye (tear fluid); this can range from an actual eye infection, something stuck under an eyelid or a potential conjunctivitis. Treatment with antibiotic eye drops/gel, lubricants and painkiller will be prescribed by your vet according to their findings.

Any milky crusts are from not properly absorbed eye cleaning fluid, which piggies use to keep their eyes clean and hydrated instead of constantly blinking like we humans do. If that happens constantly, the tear duct may be blocked.

Okay! Thank you for your answer, I’ll call the vet and book an appointment for them.

Thank you for your answer! My closest vet is closed right now but I will call first thing in the morning. The fluid is transparent so I really hope it’s not an URI. Also I’ll see what I can do regarding contacting the previous owner.

No, it is definitely not a URI but most likely something stuck under a lid or a conjunctivitis. ;)
Whatever it is, it pretty uncomfortable, so please your little one in.
Here are our tips for vet visits. You may want to look up on your vet's website whether and in what form there are any changes to consultations, seeing that Sweden has a very different approach compared to the strict social distancing and safety rules in the UK, especially during the months of lockdowns and severe restrictions in between them.

If you have rehomed privately, I am very sorry that your legal stance is a lot weaker.
