Hi,

I have recently acquired a baby guinea pig and have noticed that his urine is white and he is pooing a lot, although it doesn't look like diarrhea. Is this something that happens naturally or should I seek advice from a vet? I have added vegetables to his diet and he's now on a different dry mix. Could this also be a factor?

All advice is welcome as I am not used to dealing with babies. My other piggies have all been rescue piggies.

Thanks!

White or milky urine is common in guinea pigs and indicates that their could be too much calcium in the diet. Spinach, carrots and other foods with a high ca value do cause the milky urine.

As for the pooping, yep thats what they do. The poop a hell of a lot. I think because they are grazers and eat regularly that it's continually pushed through their system. It's nothing to worry about. :)

I think having whitish wee indicates too much calcium in their diet, which ultimately could lead to the development of renal stones.
Perhaps try cutting down on veg such as greens, cabbage, little or no spinach etc and see if that helps. Have a look at the calcium content of your pellet food too :)

Try giving extra water by syringe. Some piggies do not drink enough and this can pre dispose them to sludgy urine.
