Hello, I’m really concerned about gus iv just noticed bloody scabs at the bottom on his back. I’ll be taking him to the vets but does anyone know what it could be? (The picture is bad he wiggles to much, but it’s like this all down the bottom of his back, there’s nothing up near his face or arms) A969B301-C624-4561-BAF4-AD49AC4D6FFF.webp87CAF50B-4A41-4983-912B-0E84E4A96821.webp

he lives with another male (twix) so they do chase each other around but they never get into fights And twix doesn’t have anything on him Iv had a good look. If it was mites would they both have them or is it possible for just the one. Thank you for answer

If it is nipping from twix, then twix wouldn’t have anything on him.

Mites - if you aren’t seeing any other symptoms of mites ie excessive scratching and hair loss, flaking skin, then it may well not be mites at all. It is possible for just one to be affected though. Mites live in piggies a lot of the time but the immune system keeps them in check. If a piggy become stressed then the immune system is lowered and an infestation can take hold.

No I haven’t noticed anything different with him, I’ll take him to the vets and let them look at him properly but thank you again, iv just had a panic moment

It could be bite marks from his cage mate. How old are they, how long have they been together and what size cage do they have?

A vet will be able to give you answers.
I have had one guinea pig in a cage with 2 others and only 1 has shown symptoms of mites.
He was diagnosed by a vet, and I treated all 3 pigs just to be sure.

I got them when they were 8 months and now there just over one. And there in a good size run 4ftX4 and there have climbing parts but they do chase each other’s to climb on each other so maybe it is that.

Yer it’s the best thing to do so u don’t have to worry about them. I personally think it’s mites there’s to much to be biting.

Mounting and chasing is normal dominance behaviour. All the best with the vet.
