Goldie
Adult Guinea Pig
Late last night my lovely Joey passed away in my arms.
I had owned Joey for over five years. As many of you know he had been poorly for quite a while (see my posting entitled Scurvy back in July), coupled with the fact that he had a bladder stone removed at the age of six months, hence a big hernia on his tummy.
He had numerous problems, particularly recently with his bowels and weepy eyes .... I had taken to the vet on three occasions lately. However, he began to eat less and less and hardly moved around.
I went to tuck him in for the night last night and I knew instinctively that he had taken a turn for the worse. I wrapped him in a towel and sat with him in the kitchen, stroking and speaking to him for about an hour ... then all of a sudden I realised that he wasn't breathing anymore and he had gone! Very peacefully!
I was so happy that I was there for him and I know in my heart that he waited for me, as we had such a special bond. In 17 years of owning guinea pigs, a piggy passing away that like that has never happened to me. It was really upsetting but also comforting to be with him when he went!
He is buried in the garden now but I am missing him terribly because I used to do so much for him to keep him clean and comfortable on a day-to-day basis.
Anyway ... here is Joey ....
