I have owned Holly since December 2002 when I adopted her from Cottontails Rescue aged approx 6/8 weeks. She lives on her own as I couldn't bond her with either a boar or sow but she has always been a very happy piggy.
She has been a healthy and robust girl with a big tummy and I have never had to take her to the vet.

This is Holly a few weeks ago ....

Anyway, when I went to tuck her in for the night on Friday, she was huddled in her bedroom with a weird look in her eyes and her limbs were quivering and her tummy seemed really really big. I spent time gently massaging her belly, wrapped her in a towel and kept her indoors overnight.
Yesterday morning she seemed to have perked up and the size of her tummy had gone down a little, but today she isn't eating or drinking and won't come out of her bedroom. She is passing firm poos and is weeing.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated!
I am having a bad time here ... I lost Fizz in April, Rikkyboy in July, then the little dead baby and Joey is really poorly also. I know it is really that I had owned these for a long time and they were old, but it all seems to be coming at once! :(
Thanks.

It does possibly sound like bloat. I think a vets visit is on order as their are 2 types of bloat, gas and fluid and it is life threatening.

I hope she gets well, I will keep my fingers crossed xx

Thats a lovely photo of Holly, she looks like a real character! I hope she feels better soon.

Like the others said, sounds like Bloat.

I would take her to a vet. :)
In the meantime, try gently massaging her sides. When my pig had bloat this helped a lot. :)
Hope she is better soon

xx

How is she now? Keep her off fruit and veg, keep her inside and feed her plenty of high quality hay. Maybe give fresh water more often too so she can flush out her system. Definately take her to the vet though x

Thanks for your replies .... I am just off to the vet with Holly as she is now worse! :...:...

We've got our paws crossed for the darling Holly x>>x>>x>>x>>

i'll be checking this thread again soon xxxxxxxxxxx
Hugs for you to love xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Very sad and unexpected this morning ... I made the decision to have Holly put to sleep :(:(

She was a lovely girl and she would have been 6 years old in October. As I said above I got her from a rescue when she was 6/8 weeks old back in December 2002. A long time ago!

Basically, the vet knew from feeling her that there was something abnormal in her tummy, either related to her bladder, i.e. stones, or her uterus. They scanned her tummy and then the vet phoned to say that she had a growth .... either a tumour or cyst ... near her ovaries and it was approx 6 - 7 cm in diameter! :( It would have been slow growing until it started to press on her vital organs, hence the bloated tummy and her not eating and drinking.

I had already said that I didn't want her to undergo any surgery so I agreed for her to be relieved of her pain.

I have now lost three adult piggies since April but I know that I did what was best for Holly.

Thanks everyone for their concern ... I appreciated your support, it really helped xx

goldie i'm so sorry, i had to make the same decision with my penny a few years ago (i still cry about her sometimes, she was the special one).

You gave her a wonderful life, you should be proud of yourself. It takes alot of strength to make that decision.

sending you hugs

I'm so sorry to hear about Holly. You did your best for her and gave her the best life possible. I'm sure that she much appeciates the decision that you made as you free'd her from pain. Sorry about the bad time that you've had this year. I'm sure all 3 of them are watching over you x

I am sorry for your loss. Holly seemed to be such a happy little thing on the photo - really pretty. It is always hard to make those decisions, I know :0
