Hi everyone I was just wondering if this is a good enough pen for my two lovely guinea pigs they both get on really well and the only time they are always in there is over night I normally leave the cage door open and let them free roam around my room and play if there’s any suggestions on what I could add or take out please let me know

do you have a photo?

the important factor with any area they get locked into, is that it meets the size requirements. I appreciate you allow them to free roam during the day but it still needs to meet the standards for the time they are closed in whether that be overnight or longer periods in the day when you aren’t there to supervise them - and that is a minimum measurement of 120cm x 60cm (minimum rspca welfare standard). A pair of boys always require a larger cage size (we recommend a minimum of 150cm x 60cm on this site) as lack of space is one of the main reasons for boars to fall out. The fact they have access out of their cage is good though.

Is that their hideys on the left hand side?

Ok I will look for a bigger cage as it is 100cm by 50 thank you for letting me know

Yes it is they’re hideys on the left

if I recall, your piggies are around six months old. It is also a good idea with a pair of teenage boys to ensure you have two of every item - bowl, bottles, hay piles, hideys. It just minimises the risk of fall outs. Teenage boys can be fickle so you don’t want to do anything to give them an excuse to argue!

Perhaps you could just add some c&c grids to the front of it to increase the space and give them a secure area to be locked in

I’m afraid that they definitely need a bigger cage to be shut in to when they aren’t free roaming especially as they’re boys. As above, may be you could attach some c and c grids to the front to make the cage bigger?

Ok I will try to get some c&c grids and I will put in 2 of everything instead of one

I have just asked my mum to get some c&c grids because I can’t afford them and she said no is there any way I can make the cage bigger using things I have at my house

Yes sorry I forgot to put it on View attachment 128126
Hi, I would definitely recommend upgrading your cage to a bigger one. My three pigs live in a 2x6 C&c age. Don’t get a cage from the pet store, they are normally very expensive and two small. You can diy a cage inexpensiveley while also meeting the correct requirements for your guinea pigs. A YouTube channel I would recommend watching is Little Adventures. She diy ed her cage using wood and some waterproof material. Also, I noticed your cage doesn’t have any bedding. This is important, otherwise your guinea pigs can get bacterial infections like bumblefoot from stepping on faeces and urine. I use 100% dust extracted aspen wood shavings in three quarters of the cage (pine or cedar shavings are toxic) and vetbed in 1/4 of the cage. Either get a natural soft brand of bedding or alternatively you can use fleece or vetbed. And please put more hay in the cage.

I agree try it diy it's really easy u can practically make a cage with anything(piggy safe) I made my cage by diy too because here we don't get c&c or any other type of cage material we need to buy it internationally

Hi, it might help you - I bought a wire bookcase on ebay - it worked out much less than half the price of c&c grids and connectors but it is basically the same thing. It came flat packed in a box and is really easy to make up yourself, in whatever shape you want. You can buy small or large ones and postage was free. I used cheap cable ties to make a door and use clothes pegs to keep it shut. Good luck :)
