hello
We woke up yesterday morning to find that one of our guinea pigs eye was slightly closed. i did research on it and it looked like a hay poke but we're not sure. as pepper (the guinea pig) is new he is still very skittish and scared. we have been taking every chance we can get to clean it with salt water in one direction but after a day nothing has happened, we bought an anti bacterial eye drop and it coming soon. should we wait until that comes and see what happens? it was getting better this morning but got worse again this evening. thankyou-please help.

Defo see a vet.. there could well be something stuck in the eye and a vet will be able to confirm and remove it...as mentioned eyes can deteriorate very quickly...

Any half closed or drawn in eye should be seen promptly. An eye poke can at first not be very noticeable because it is hidden behind a film of tear fluid and then a film of ulceration gunk some time later. Vets in the UK will do their best to have any potential eye injury seen as quickly as possible because they can deteriorate very quickly but also heal the quicker and without problems the sooner you have them seen and step in with treatment.

Because eye treatment and medication is the same for guinea pigs as it is for other common pet species, a general vet will do. Speed is of essence, not piggy savviness. See a vet either tonight as a (very expensive) emergency or book your piggy in first thing tomorrow morning to be seen as soon as possible. it is really that is important. ;)

PLEASE do not home treat on spec; you can make things easily worse.
