With the heatwave in the UK, I’ve been really worried about my pigs. i made sure to take them out last night into the garden when it started getting cool and they had quite a lot of grass. However, I gave them their usual portion of salad before bed and when I woke up this morning, it’s all there still.

i have a frozen bottle in their enclosure, windows open and a fan in my room too. They aren’t panting, don’t look obviously ill or anything, just lazing around the cage. They seem to have eaten some of the Fresh hay I topped up last night.

Should I be worried or is it normal for piggies to not eat as much during a heat wave?

They may have had enough grass and not wanted the veg. As long as they are eating plenty of hay, that’s the main thing. Keep a closer eye on their weight so you can be sure.

Guinea pigs do not pant.
Do you have a thermometer in the room?
Only have windows open during the coolest parts of the day. Other tips on how to keep them cool are in this guide

I find this normal in hot weather. It’s natural to want to give them tonnes of grass time but as mentioned by Puggiee&Buns hay all the way. A hay tray is best, if they eat pellets and veggies then great!
