Hiya. I got Harry and Neville a while ago now (about a month and a half) when they were eight months old an I have speant a lot of time talking and strokeing them but they are still not too used to us and run away whenever we enter the room. Is there something wrong or do they just take longer to get used to you if they have been in a pet shop for ages with people just staring at them with no where to hide?

Ta xx

YOu boys have probably not had much, if any human contact before they came into a shop, either. Piggies can sometimes take a very long time to get used to humans, but patience and persistence will pay off.

Try to have regular cuddles with them and turn the picking up into a routine with certain phrases said with the same melody. Give them lots of praise like you would a dog and a treat to look forward to at the end of it. The more your boys are getting used to a routine and know what is coming the easier it will be to settle in.

Perhaps you can build a little run for them to have some special time out; many of us do. But be prepared that that may take some initial getting used to, as well!

This is the same with my two. Ive had them for about 6 weeks and they are about 14weeks old.
Ive been taking them out loads and when ive been in the room a little bit they come out for some food.
Perservere and they will come round. Also whenever you take them out for a cuddle its good to offer them some food so they will realise that you are not going to hurt them and they will associate cuddle time with treats.
Good luck :)

Mine still run and hide when I walk in the room but usually come back out when they realise it's just me. I think it's quite a natural response. Sometimes if I'm talking (to them) before I come into the room they stay still- I think they realise the big moving thing coming into their space is someone they know. :(|)

I totally agree with this, I think it's normal for them to flee! Mine flee when I go near their cages but when they realise it's me they come back out - usually to see if I have food ;)
