Hello there! This is my first post here, and I made this account to ask about some peculiar Guinea pig behavior I've been experiencing. My pig's name is Kimmy, and she's about a year old, give or take. Tri - colored abby, very cuddly and personable.

I actually bought her for my boyfriend sometime last August, and she and him have been inseparable for the past year or so. However, he transferred to a new college this year, and his apartment doesn't allow pets, so Kimmy has been in my care for the past week or so.

When my boyfriend owned her, he'd always comment about how much she loved Blind Guardian, a German power metal band we're both fans of. I thought he was just being silly and giving his cuddly friend a personality to match his own. Then he brought her over one day, and, lo and behold, she purred and popcorned and chirped happily whenever he'd put on metal. And it's not a coincidence - as soon as the music goes off she shuts up. We tried getting her to react to classical, folk, and modern music, but she only likes metal.

It's not that I'm complaining that she shares our music tastes, but I'm wondering if this is a common thing with guinea pigs. I've never heard of it before, and I've owned guinea pigs in the past and researched it a bit online. Could this be an acquired personality trait of some sort, or is there some other reason for Kimmy being a little metalhead?

Oh, and one more question (sorry for this wall of text :P)

She likes to give kisses. Constantly. Whenever she's on my lap or anywhere where she can reach skin, she licks and licks and licks. It's very cute and she sort of acts like a puppy, but I was wondering if this is any cause for worry -- I know that it's a possibility that she's just trying to lick the salt off, and could that hint towards some kind of Sodium deficiency? :( I just want my piggy happy and healthy.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Kimmy is an only piggy, isn't she? She'll have a very close bond with her human then (especially if you got her when she was still quite young), as she has transferred all her piggy feelings to her human companion. the kisses are that - piggy cuddling!

I know that my Llewelyn likes watching Strictly come Dancing and Dancing on Ice - he seems attracted by the combination of music and patterns.

Yes, she's an only piggy. :P We tried to get her to bond with our old pig, Wizzabeff, but they fought and fought and eventually we had to keep them separated. She's a very dominating little thing, and doesn't seem to do well around other small animals. She even bosses around my dogs.

I've never noticed my piggies loving any particular music more than others - but then I don't have music on too often in the flat as I like to have it really loud.......and the neighbours don't.

My piggy Trixie seems to like Metal, loud as well - she also likes a little bit of Emo, but i think this is more to do with her hair (long, jet black with a killer fringe/mohecan!), she is more lively when this type of music is on, she skips about very happily! I think its more a case of I like it,so she likes it too!

Silver likes my music she rumblestruts when i'v got iTunes up :) my music tastes are mostly metal, punk and grunge so she's not alone maybe Silver and Kim could start a moshpit ;)

Tell me about it. Odie Loves to popcorn when he hears, metal and hardcore/screamo. I think they just adjust to our taste in music, because of their daily surroundings. But Odie like it loud aswell. ^_^

I think that piggys get used to the music around them and it grows to be familiar and comforting to them?
My piggys always seem to be active and like it when my music is on but when i play something different they don't seem as sure lol

I think her licks are just affection - like a dog =D
