hi everyone, i have 4 guinea pigs, one of my guinea pigs is named roxy and seems to be in a lot of pain. She wont eat anymore and wont move. She urinated and wont move from that location. We tried giving her some food/hay/pellets/and some fruits but she refused to eat. She seems to be in pain and starting to limp.. Her right side is bulging, like maybe she could be bloated, but it doesnt seem hard. SO my family isnt sure what to do. Right now she is in her tiny house and laying down, she has food and water next to her and a warm light so she wont get cold... We are taking her to the vet tomorrow but I don't know what else i can do to help her. we woulds take her to the vet today, but its closed. Usually i dont go on these types of sites to ask for help, but I'm really worried for her... can anyone give me some useful information of anything more i can do? I'm scared she wont make the night so if ANYONE has any credible advice please answer.

P.S she is also breathing heavily :help:
(ALSO IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFORMATION ON WHY THIS IS HAPPENING TO HER, PLEASE EXPLAIN)

Hi and welcome

HUGS

I am very sorry. Weekend illnesses are such a nightmare! Your piggy sounds very, very ill (blockage in the gut?) and may potenially not survive the night.

Please see a vet as soon as possible tomorrow. I assume you are US based?

Step in with feeding support now since your piggy is obviously not able to eat and drink for themselves anymore. However if your piggy really fights the food or is too weak to swallow, then they may no longer be able to process it. :(

Our syringe feeding guide contains a chapter on how to improvise in an emergency with practical tips and also a chapter on how to spot when your piggy is no longer able to process food and may be dying.
Our emergency and crisis care collection link contains all the practical information that you may need in a hurry.

Not Eating, Weight Loss And The Importance Of Syringe Feeding Fibre
All About Syringe Feeding and Medicating Guinea Pigs with Videos and Pictures

Emergency and Crisis Care as well as Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment (practical information collection)

Fingers firmly crossed. We are UK based, so I have included the necessary how-to information links that will hopefully help you during our forum downtime in view that you cannot get to a vet for the best part of a day at the soonest and need to be covered for the worst case scenario as well since that is quite a long time with a very ill piggy.

I am keeping my fingers very firmly crossed.

Thank you so much for answering, she is currently still in the same spot and we have been checking up on her often. She won't eat still, but we gave her some water through a syringe and she happily took it. I'm very scared she wont make the night, we will be seeing the vet as soon as it opens tomorrow. SHe is still breathing quite heavily, and our family has shed quite a few tears. Thanks for all your help, any other info would be welcomed 😢😭 I'll check the links, thanks again for everything. Also we did think it was some blockage in her gut so we did try to get some atibiotics but they would not arrive till tomorrow... We are very hopeful but quite sad since we know the worse case scenario may not be far ahead.

I’m so sorry your piggy is so poorly. Good luck at the vets. I really hope they will be able to help her. Sending healing vibes her way and hugs to you and your family. ❤️

Antibiotics don't help for a physical blockage in the gut of guinea pigs. It is not caused by a bacterial infection. Guinea pigs also don't suffer from constipation.

All the best. I hope that the links are going to help you.

My thoughts are with you and your family - and of course your poorly piggy.

Hi everyone thanks for your support... We checked on Roxy this morning, and she was not breathing... I think she passed away during the night... she was still in her house laying down... 😞🥺😭 Her belly is hard, and the other 3 guinea pigs i think haven't realized that she passed... Again thanks for being there yesterday, i was very desperate, and i will forever miss Roxy... We've had Roxy since she was small we had her for about 5 years, so this hits hard, she was part of the family...

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Sending love

If the other piggies are in the same area, they will have realised by now. Guinea pigs do process these things and appear to move on quickly (prey animal survival instincts)

Sleep tight beautiful Roxy 🌈 💕

Oh, ok i hope this doesnt affect them in any way, they were very close with each other. Thanks for giving that info. We will be burying roxy soon :((((

They should be ok. Keep an eye on them. As long as they are displaying normal behaviours and eating, they are fine. Prey animals are very resilient

Again, so sorry for your loss

I’m so sorry Roxy has passed over the rainbow bridge. Take care ❤️

I’m so sorry to hear that you lost Roxy. Go gently as you grieve.
