My guinea pig may not make it

Hello! I’m here to talk about my guinea pig. There’s nobody to ask about how to know what is going on with her and I just want to find clarity. My guinea pig, well where do I start?

I have a guinea pig named Nickel and I got her and her play mate from a woman. That one died somehow and I woke up to her laying motionless in the cage. After that, I was working on getting Nickel another cage mate because I feared the worst that she was gonna get depressed. Then I started to notice she kind of liked being alone so I decided against getting one. Especially with this virus.

Anywho, a two weeks ago, I discovered her eye was getting very crusty and because that was kind of weird for her and because I worry so much, I brought it up to my mom. I looked online and didn’t find anything accurate about it. A week later her nose started to swell up. It got bigger and bigger on the left side. One night I decided to pick her up and look at her. I inspected her teeth and found a circular type brown spongey looking thing over her left tooth. With concern for her, I went to a vet and he’s the only vet that takes care of guinea pigs in an 100 mile radius.

When he looked over Nickel, he prescribed her two different medicines and a powder because before we were about to leave for the vet, her nose had started to burst open and bleed. Now this was on the top of her nose and not the nostrils. They gave her back to us with the medicine and she had a now big black scab on her nose. They also told me she may have a tooth overgrowth, a tumor, or cancer.

Fast forward to now, after giving her medicine at the specified time every day and night, she was still eating, drinking, pooping, and seeming happy. Last night was the worst night I have ever seen her though. As I was sitting at my computer talking and playing with friends, the big scab had somehow fell off her nose to reveal something nasty. She bled almost everywhere and she was getting weak. We had to clean her wound with peroxide because I had never owned anything for guinea pig’s to clean wounds. I wasn’t even wanting to prepare for something as saddening as this.

Right now, she’s kind of eating and her breathing is really rough. I have to give her her medicine in two hours but I don’t know how long she’s gonna hold on for. The vet isn’t open today either. I don’t know how to keep cleaning the wood and I don’t know how to bandage it. I need help. Please tell me what to do because I want to make sure she won’t suffer if this is her last day.

I am so sorry that you are having such a rough time with Nickel.
If you are in the UK your vet will have provision for emergency care, is the same true where you are?
Is there any type of vet you can get to today?

I’m not a health expert but plain water will be perfectly safe to clean the wound.
One of the health experts will be along at some point for you but if you can get her to a vet that would be best.

Holding you in my heart

Thank you for responding. I live in the US so I am not sure if it’s the same where I am. Also since Guinea pigs are rare for vets to see, there’s only one doctor that could help but his office and the vet itself is closed for today.

Did the vets say the wound on the nose was an abscess? And what did he think was wrong to prescribe the medicine? And what medicine was prescribed?

I’m not sure they mentioned an abscess because they didn’t know and I didn’t know the scab would just pop off. Doing research it does seem to have the same description as an abscess. There’s pink skin and then a big hole underneath with disgusting stuff in it. For the most part, she’s only bled. I haven’t seen any other substance. Also the medicine he had prescribed was pain management medicine but only 5 days worth which I already used and the medicine she has to use for 2 weeks is Trimeth Sulfa which is an antibiotic I give her by mouth every 12 hours. He thought she had a tooth overgrowth or cancer so that’s why he prescribed that medicine.

Did he check the back teeth properly? Was it an X-ray or once over?

Since it was a drive in Vet because of the virus, I don’t know how he examined everything. All I know is they did an exam and I’m pretty sure he did because he saw the food in the back of her mouth which is a good sign. There was no X-Ray.

Hi and welcome!

I am ever so sorry for the situation you are in; it sounds very nasty indeed!
Whatever it is obviously getting into the airways now and is starting to obstruct the breathing, hence the crackling. :(

Here are our emergency care tips; the link contains all pertinent information what you can do with what you have at home or easily available in a pinch as emergencies very often don't happen at good time. Not everybody has access to round the clock or even same day/next day vet care; even if it is only to euthanise a suffering piggy without real chances for recovery.

Thank you so much!

My fingers are very firmly crossed for Nickel and you!
Thank you so much as well! I am hoping tomorrow I can get her to a vet immediately if she holds on long enough.

Update.

She feels lighter than usual and is getting kinda skinny. Nickel‘s nose hardened up into a black scab but she won’t eat or anything. She keeps making this little noise that’s very faint but there. When I gave her medicine around now, she didn’t want to take it. I don’t know if she’ll make it til morning but I am optimistic. What should I do though? Just let her keep lounging around and getting weaker and weaker by the hour? I don’t know what to do.

I’m afraid she really needs to see a vet. Keep her warm though not hot, and comfortable. Have you managed to get a vet appointment?

:agr:
Only a vet can really offer the help that she needs now.
She needs to be seen urgently so hopefully you can get an appointment soon.
There are some helpful suggestions in the links Wiebke posted above.

She has an appointment in the afternoon so I think it’ll get better. Suddenly, she’s starting to want to eat again so I feel that’s a really good sign.

Good luck. Do let us know the outcome, we’re rooting for Nickel

I’m sad to say. Nickel had been holding on and breathing when it was so hard for her. Her nose turned out to be a cancerous tumor and it wasn’t treatable so I had to make one of the most saddening decisions.

I had to put her to rest so she didn’t suffer any longer. The vet let me have as long as I wanted to take to say goodbye to Nickel. I‘m heartbroken.

May she rest in piece though! Nickel is in a better place.
(Two of the last photos I took of her)

If she could talk she would be so grateful to you for letting her go peacefully and rest. She will be on that rainbow bridge finding her cage mate and catching up 🙂🌈

I’m sorry for your loss. You did a selfless thing to give her rest. Take good care of yourself 💓

I am so sorry.
That decision is one of the hardest we ever make but it is a gift of love.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve

Sending you big hugs, so sorry you have lost Nickel, but you did the kindness last act of love for her x
sleep tight gorgeous girl 🌈
