Hi! My guinea pig Chester is almost 6 months old, he is usually very energetic and friendly, he runs up to the cage door when someone approaches and he popcorns a lot also. But today i woke up and noticed he was sitting in a corner, i thought it was kind of weird cause usually in the morning he is in his house or waiting next to his food bowl for me to fill it up. When I approached the cage he just stayed in that position and i noticed also that there were more food left in the bowl than there usually is and he had drunk only half of the amount he usually does drink every day. When i went to pet him he looked scared, and he also got scared at movements out of the cage (for example me removing the water bottle) which he usually doesnt do. I came back with a full bowl of food, some carrots that he gets every morning and fresh water. He always smells the carrots and runs to the cage door but this time he didnt want to move from his spot, and when i placed all the stuff back in his cage he still didn’t bother to eat or drink. I decided to then change the hay and i knew he would always get excited when i give him hay but again he did nothing. He sometimes backs up slowly moving hos butt like he is going to pee. It also looks like he is breathing fast or his heart is pumping fast. Also he has been sneezing a lot recently. I am currently sitting next to his cage and writing this and i hear him teeth scattering, he is moving more but just turning around in his corner. I am concerned, this behaviour is not normal for him. :(

You really need to take your guinea pig to the vet as a matter of urgency. If your guinea pig is not eating this is an emergency and you will need to step in with syringe feeding.

This post should really be in the health and illness section of the forum which is monitored on a regular basis.

His change of mood and not eating is a sign the little guy not well. He needs a trip to vets asap and I'm sure you and Chester get some answerss.
pls let us know how you and he get on.

He is more energetic today, he eats and drinks by himself. I let him run around when i was cleaning his cage and he was popcorning and it looks like he is feeling better but we are still going to get him checked tomorrow just in case :)

Hey! Could u tell us what happened after the vet visit..? my guinea pig is going through a similar situation and I'm really worried for him.. it's a national strike in our country today so taking him to the vet will be a bit difficult.. if u cud tell me how it went for your guinea it'll be really helpful..

The poster hasn't been seen since they posted here three years ago so there's a good chance they won't see your message, unfortunately.

Could you post your own support thread and let us know a bit more about what's going on? It's midnight here in the UK (the majority of members and staff members are UK-based) but someone should be about, at least in the morning. We can't replace a vet (legally as well as practically) but it may be that someone beyond this poster has experience relevant to you :)

This post was made very long ago, and i had not seen the new messages, since I had not turn on the notification via email :(. I remember that the vet had not found anything concerning or any problems, so we didn't really get a clear answer to why he had been acting differently for that short amount of time. But after that he was being his usual energetic and happy self. Unfortunately in July of 2023 Chester passed away.
