So my guinea pig is a female, she’s about exactly a year old. Yesterday she was on my lap and we were sitting together when she suddenly leaped off my lap and fell onto the floor. I’m not sure exactly how she landed, but i’m afraid she maybe got shocked or scared. She’s eating perfectly fine, pooping normally, chomping on hay, not hunched over, active and begging for treats. When she dropped she didn’t scream or squeak, she just stood there still. the only thing that’s changed is that she is not reacting to me. for instance when i normally call her over, she’ll run to me, or if i say the word “come” or call her name she’ll run to me and easily shift her attention to me, but now when i call her to try to get her attention it’s like i’m not there. she doesn’t aknowledge me and is not interested in interacting with me. Along with this she keeps walking away from me completely ignoring me or any of my remaining 5 family members, she never behaves this way. could she be concussed or is her vision possibly distorted from the fall? I have called all of the 24 hour hospitals in my area and the earliest exotic vet available isn’t available until 9 AM. This isn’t for 4 hours. I just want to know if anyone else has had this happen or has dealt with a pig that’s spooked? I just want to emphasize that she’s completely normal in her diet and poops, i checked her body and teeth and nothing changed, her behavior in interacting with me is just off and I want to know if anyone else’s pig has acted this way or if she’s still spooked from the fall. Please let me know, i’ll be taking her to the vet as soon as my Exotic gets there today.

I’ve had a pig jump from a big height trying to jump from my arms into the cage once, he was young and landed on carpet. He bit his lip but was just very shaken afterwards and wasn’t his usual talkative self for a few hours. The vet decided he was just shocked. Maybe she’s just shaken. Are her eyes any different in the light? (Pupils diluted or rapid eye movements?) I don’t think she would be concussed from that height, especially if she landed on her feet, but I’m no expert (clearly). I would wait it out, keep checking on her until you can get to the vet.

I hope she is ok. Any fall needs to be checked out as piggies hide their pain and symptoms so you cannot always tell that they are in fact ok. Switch from weighing her weekly to weighing her daily at the same time each so you can know if she is in fact eating enough hay (you cannot judge hay intake by eye) While she gets over this.
