Hi guys, my 2 year old guinea pig is not pooping or eating. his belly is swollen. I've already given her gas medicine because her belly is making noise and also the poop soup. I noticed that when he breathes he is making a noise but his lungs appear to be clean.

What can this be?

I'm sorry to hear this.

Please urgently see a vet.
Please urgently step in and syringe feed him either a fibre rich recovery feed such as oxbow critical care or mush his guinea pig pellets with warm water to make a slurry to syringe feed to him.
This is urgent. Poop output is 1-2 days behind food intake so if he isn’t pooping then he hasn’t eaten any food for many days. A piggy who isn’t eating and isn’t pooping urgently needs help.
Their system needs fibre (hay) to be constantly going through it and without their system can shut down (stasis).

You need to switch from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weigh him every morning so you can ensure you get enough syringe feed into him. He needs to be fed around the clock, every two hours as much as he will take at each sitting.

What gas medicine have you given him?
Bloat is painful so he also needs pain meds from the vet.

Please read the green links I’ve added below. They explain how to syringe feed, how important it is and how bloat needs to be dealt with

I hope he is ok

Hi and welcome

I fully agree with @Piggies&buns and would like to ask you to please read the links in her post. They are very practical and you should find them very helpful.

Please also have a read of the heat stroke chapter and GI stasis chapter in the links below, in case it is caused by the recent deadly heatwave that has swept your country.

All the best for your poorly girl.

Good luck. I hope your piggy can be seen by a vet as soon as possible. Sending healing vibes.

Good morning, my little pig has improved, now he is eating normally and has pooped a few times. I'm giving him paste too. your belly is not swollen and your breathing is normal. Now I'm just going to observe whether his condition improves or not and any sign of worsening I'll take him to the vet. Unfortunately I can't afford the vet at the moment because I'm unemployed, so I asked for help and thank you very much.

Please weigh your piggy daily and do still step in with syringe feeding.
Hay makes up three quarters of what they need to eat in a day and the amount they eat cannot be gauged by eye (you can only tell through the essential routine weight checks)

Updates: he continues to eat well but he pooped differently, it's very shiny and like that. Have you ever seen something similar?

It is because there has been a disturbance in his gut and food intake.

Please weigh him daily and syringe feed him recovery feed.
You need to make sure his weight is stable every day to know that he is eating enough hay and that his gut is recovering.

I noticed that today his eyes are droopy, he is still eating very well and drinking water but he only stays in a corner of the pen and is not as agitated as usual.

Can guinea pigs take human dipyrone or paracetamol?
Maybe my little pig is in pain and I'm trying to buy animal dipyrone but the pet store is closed at this time. Can anyone help me immediately?

Some guinea pigs get paracetamol prescribed, but I wouldn’t recommend doing anything without a vets input. I’m not sure about dipyrone but again, I wouldn’t give your piggy anything without a vets input, certainly not your own medication.

What’s up with your piggy?

He seems to be unwell.
You need to have him seen by a vet, to get a proper diagnosis and medication to help him.

When you say he is eating normally, what is he eating?
Are you using kitchen scales and weighing him every morning? Hay is their main food intake and the only way to know he is eating well is by the weight checks every morning.
Are you mushing normal guinea pig pellets into a slurry with water and syringe feeding him?

I’ve merged your two threads together.
We cannot advise you to give any medication to your piggy without consulting a vet.
