i have 2 guinea pigs
2 girls , that came to me at 6 & 5 months old (not related)
the ginger one is so calm & has never bitten me but the black one i have hates being picked up! only my hubbie can get her & then she was on my lap yesterday after being out on the grass to graze & she bit my arm!
not hard but just nibbled it, she hates me stroking her head too, she sort of nudges it away!
i dont want to favour the ginger one because she is loving & calm , i want the same relationship with the black one too :0
they are indoor piggies and have floor time daily & live in a big cage happily for the rest of the time, the black one is very food orientated and is getting a bit fat so I'm trying to restrict her veggies a little bit
any advice out there ?
many thanks

When I first had my Piggies I was thinking that they hated me. You need to be patient and take things easy. Some Guinea Pigs will never like being picked up so my advice is to just not pick up your black one but just walk up to the cage and slowly talk to her. My two Guinea Pigs have different personalities, Aero will sit happily on my lap squeeking away but Fudge will just stare at me until I put her back in her cage.

And with the whole overeating thing with your black Guinea Pig I would just make sure you're Guinea Pig has only 1/4 of a cup of vegetables and maybe she isn't getting enough exercise so try and space her vegetables around the cage and in hard to get places to she has to work for her food, I'm sure she'll enjoy it. Also do you have a hay rack Guinea Pigs enjoy putting their front legs on the bars and picking out bits of hay to eat.

I have four piggies and they are all very different:

1.Charlie-Very calm, laid back, will let you pick him up etc... and will sit on your knee but hates to be stroked, especially on his head and will knock you away. I have had him since he was a baby and is now almost four years old.

2. George-Rescue piggie, got him at 7 weeks, is pretty laid back too, is happy to let me stroke him and pick him up but hates to be caught.

(Charlie and George live together)

3.Bailey-Rescue piggy, pretty chilled out, got him at 8 months with his brother Jack, happy to be held and stroke but can be quite timid at times.

4.Jack-Rescue piggy, extremely timid, hates to be picked up, will scratch and bite if he can, will bulge when you pick him up and try to get away at any chance. However, when I put him on the settee for a while next to me he gradually relaxes and will let me stroke him but thats about it.

My advice would be to just be patient. Be aware of what they like and don't like and take it a step at a time. You piggy may never like to be stroked like Charlie, however, with time and patience there may be other places they like to be stroked. Charlie will just about tolerate a chin rub but that took 3 years to achieve haha. I would love for all of them to be cuddly and placid, however, as Jack and Bailey were rescued at 8 months I know that they may have had a troubled past and that I need to respect their feelings. I hope this helps :) I'm sure that your piggy doesn't hate you :)

Also, I use a piggy bed that they can crawl in to rather than pick them up with my hands. It has taken a while but they do this in and out with no fuss now :)

Thanks girls. yes they have a hay rack & i do hide little treats around the cage for them . they are out in the run in the living room every day to have exercise as they are indoor piggies :)
Susie lets me stroke her but hates being picked up! she was on my lap and tried nibbling my arm!
i love them dearly & its my first time owning piggies.
They were a xmas pressie :)
They love my little boy they run to the front of the cage when he talks to them
i Will just be patient & give her time
maybe she just hates me because i cut her spurs off the other day!
Funny little things :)

at least you dont have a screamer rolleyes fudge sounds like I am trying to kill her as I stroke her or hold he sometimes, silly pig :)) Yet she will come up to me when I am spot cleaning the cage and is happy to be around me, just not liking the touching.

I also have a rex that is not that happy with it either but have you tried to stroke a different area than the head, I find they like a tickle behind the ears and some like chin rubs.

It comes with confidence from them and liking being cuddled and not all piggies like it, however you could hand feed them both veggies each day and get them to come to you and enjoy them this way, I do with mine and I like them to feel comfortable enough to take food from my hand, it shows a lot of trust.

omg! i couldn't imagine her screaming! it must sound awful!
we picked her out of the cage in her sleeping bag yesterday to get her out & she was fine with that so maybe its the way to go :)
she is very food orientated ! they do let me feed them by hand & ginger likes a chin rub
susie likes me rubbing behind her ears but thats it!
she's a feisty little moo!
love her though :)
i hope in time she will like being held & stroked , i will be patient until then :(
thanks everyone
