Hello fellow cavy slaves!
I have two 1 year old female pigs; Poppy and Daisy
i love them to pieces but my only problem is they STINK...and i mean burn your nose hair stink
I have tried fleece, shavings, megazorb, carefresh, cardboard (finacard), woodpellets, you name it, i've tried it..But still the same result: 2 days after putting it in the cage with twice daily spot cleans you almost faint with the stench every time you walk into the Piggie room
Ive tried bicarbonate of soda under the bedding, i've tried cagefresh granules but NOTHING seems to work...
Suggestions?

P.S Their cage is the ferplast 120

Do their grease glands look okay? As my piggy used to smell as it was blocked, and now is fine once i cleaned it (:

What have you got under the fleece? I have 3 girls in a 5 x 2 C & C cage, I put newspaper down first, then a layer of towels, then a mattress topper (100%) cotton, then a fleece cage liner & although mine do smell by day 4-5 it lasts pretty well. I use a tray with newspaper & Carefresh in where they eat so most of the wee gets done in there. I also have extra pieces of fleece I put in the corners & change those on the 2nd day & poop pick up twice a day. :)

Sorry, couldn't help that, it's just I've still got the giggles from Yoshi's escapades. Don't know what to suggest but it's nice to know that it's not just the boys who can be complete pongos. :))
I spot clean 3 or 4 times a day, completely change the hay every day, wash the fleece every two days and change puppy pads when needed etc etc and just about manage to keep on top of it. @) It's usually okay unless Rocket has been having a "bum dragging" session. :{

I had read somewhere that fleece lasts a week... erm I disagree ... my new boys have been on the same fleece for 36 hours and I can smell something odd in the room , not totally minging but not quite right either , getting megazorb tomorrow though for the hammies so I might see how that goes for them

you have to remember when a pig goes on new bedding for example a new fleece they like to mark it as they're own so will pee a little extra just to say it's theres and get they're own scent on it :)
My fleece lasts 4 days but i clean it every 3, i use newspaper, towel and fleece on top they get poop scooped daily and i don't ever seem to notice a smell :)

I have found pampers disposabl baby changing mats REALLY cut down on the smell from my boys. I tried pupp pads as they were *slightly* cheaper. However these wernt as good as the pampers ones. I have a layer of fleece, then a mattress topper, then the pampers pads. This lasts me 3-4 days.

It may/may not work for you. Sorry I'm not more help, just a suggestion! I found fleece with towels benieth smelled badly.

Fleece could never last a week! I change mine every three days. :)

I clean mine right out every 3/4 days. The babies seem fine but I can smell the older girls whenever I come in - erm, actually I think they smell lovely.

Thanks for this. My mum has a stash of puppy pads so ill use them up. How much are the pampers? Using something disposable will cut down washing which suits me as I dont have a washer!

Well i still use fleece, then a matress protector. The matress protector spreads the urine out so it doesnt all pool in the same area, meaning it drys faster. Then the baby pads are designed to soak up wee without all the smell.

They are about £3.75 in tescos for 12, they vary slightly in price depending on the supermarket.

HTH

If in doubt, make sure theres a yankee candle burning near your front door, so thats the smell that greets your visitors! @)
I clean out my boys every 3 or 4 days, and convince myself that any smell is just from the hay! rolleyes

one of my boys stinks - I mean he himself. I gave him a bath yesterday and within minutes of putting them back into their clean cage an awful whiff filled the room - I know who the culprit is. He's a very stinky boy. I cant stand it - but I think he just does it to mark his territory. I have to change them out twice a week. They pee loads and would be all soggy if I didnt

I used to use fleece but now use carefresh on a layer of newspapers for their bedding area. I change it every other day, it really doesn't smell. I asked the OH, friends, mother and in-laws and they all agree that it doesn't smell anything like as bad as the fleece used to.

So I now recommend carefresh. (Which can also go on the compost heap with the newspaper)
