New Born Pup
Hi everyone,
Jess here from Brisbane Australia. I e introduced myself but thought I'd better introduce my guineas aswell. So this is my current tribe. For reference sake please know the majority of my guinea pigs over the years I never picked myself personally many were rescues and then there was my childhood piggies which was before my rescue years yes were bred by me as a child as pets there was about 50 then and not sold we lived on acreage. Then in my teen years I found out about pedigree breeding and registered a stud did shows only breeding very specific lines. I'd never even heard of rescue it really didn't exist in Australia and my childhood well we lived in the country and didn't even have internet most of it. My rescue years started when I turned 21 after seeing a need quite accidentally I'd seen cruelty over the years in the breeding world and via friends and finally it just clicked so I phoned my local RSPCA and they literally put me as their contact for ALL guinea pigs as there quite simply was none they were just euthanased alot of the time. I was shocked I never knew I was about to be called to save lives on a HUGE scale. The breeding the showing the lot went wayyy out the window left the lot. From age 21 to my late 20's I ran one of Australia's first and only rescues joining forces with others and took in thousands of guinea pigs needing medical care and other care it was absolutely insane and then the call just kept growing. Started Australia's very first pignics aswell and educational events inspired by my studies on what the UK was doing. The organisation was called The Australian Cavy Sanctuary. Two ladies still run the shelters I worked with in other states. Sadly due to severe anorexia I had to close I almost lost my life to it and other mental health issues which is another story. Thankfully there are quite a few rescues now in Australia and the originals still running from when I started. So go to my early 30's I was still very sick but started taking in some rescues privately again then stopped again as the anorexia and mental health issues were almost beyond help. In 2020 I moved back to my.dads property the original site of my shelter when I was in my early 20's and something magical has been happening here again I started doing private rescue again kept it on the quite. Finally I made a recovery from the major mental health issues and felt called back to my passion. Sadly we've had a turn again though this January I yet again had to close for now as one of my permanent guineas came down really unwell requiring soo many funds for vet bills and the only way I could do it was to close for now as because I hadn't registered and org again etc there was no funding for it in place etc. So something lovely has happened though I ended up opening another almost first in Australia lol Australia's first guinea pig private boarding not attached to a rescue. The concept was I still adored guineas and wanted to help but needed to not be losing money so this way I wasn't losing money but still helping to me. I have noticed since I've been running this now more rescues have just begun offering boarding that wern't lol seems coincidental but I don't think so I think they'd aw my concept and bounced off it.
So anyhow that's where we are I don't know what the future holds or if I will have guineas forever but we're going on 33yrs or so now lol I'm 38yrs old got my first two age 5.
So my current piggies and a nightmare of a year this year!
I have with me currently Toby and Emit who are brothers. I have Marcus who is their other brother and their rescue dad Handsome who is paired with him who I got late 2017 I think it was. Handsome was an adult when he came to me so not sure of his age he was surrendered to a cat rescue friend of mine in Oct 2017. Marcus and the boys were born in my care not long after I don't have the rest of the piggies from this batch they went to another rescue. Then I have miss Sigrid who was surrendered to me during my 2020 small private rescuing at 4wls old in April I think it was. Her mum sadly picked on her and she has been difficult to pair has been tried with other girls and then also was biting people. She still tries to bite me at times but I really love her and am hoping to try her with another girl again and just get her past these issues she's very sweet at times.
I've posted about Toby and Marcus's medical issues in another thread I spent thousands this year at my vet and Toby has been in intensive treatment all year. He was perfectly fine before January this year same with Marcus as of this year.
Gosh I'm so hesitant to post this I feel pain and like I didn't want to mention my breeding years but I can't change my history.
