I have seven boars who all live in one piggie room (3 pairs and 1 single). I have noticed that the piggie room changes in 'group behaviour' depending on the personalities in there at any one time. At present, I have the most settled set up I have had for a long time - 3 settled pairs and 1 single. And they have stopped wheeking!
Ok not totally but since little Grover died the wheek level has plummeted. Grover was tiny but always the first to wheek and set the others off. SInce he has gone, the others have reverted to chewing the bars (grr) or ratlling their water bottles when they want food. Any one else had a quiet phase of low wheeking?

When Amina passed in July it was a while before mine started wheeking again. I am guessing it was Grovers role to be chief wheeker and nobody has taken his place.

My longest resident here is Mrs Fudge and she hardly ever makes a sound. Mr Ted talks quietly to himself but is not a big wheeker. So as a contented pair we only ever really heard from them if Mr Ted was pushing his luck and Mrs Fudge was complaining about his rudeness.
When Connie and Violet moved in everything changed - they are the loudest wheekers - we nickname them the Wheeks Chorus. Suddenly our house was filled with the sound of wheeking. They wheek at the slightest noise or the sight of any one of us. They whip up even the quiet pair into a wheeking frenzy. Fudge who was silent for years seems compelled to join in wheeking for Britain at meal times. It's almost as if she didn't know how to do it until the 2 hooligans arrived!

Seems as though I need a loud wheeker 'choir master' to set them off again - or just withdraw the veggies for a while and see if they cave in and wheek once more!

For years I had no wheekers and when I got Sakurai I had my first ever wheeking guinea pig. I was so happy! The rest of my lot just chewed bars when they wanted their food.

Now she wheeks, they all get excited and wait for me to come up with food THEN bar chew. :))

1 of my piggies passed away 2 months ago and I have never heard my remaining girl squeek since :( I thought she would wheek once I got her a companion but nope :(

Or just try wafting the favourite veg nearby and hold off giving it for a while.

My previous piggies were major wheekers but my current pair of boars have been with me a month and hardly made a peep.

This changed yesterday when I decided to clean them out before giving veggies (they have a double hutch in a 6x4' run in the shed so I clean out while they run about my feet!), this annoyed them so much that after about 5 mins they were wheeking at the tops of their voices!

Well that is just the saddest post :(
whats the rules on you initiating a bit of wheeking? either playing a youtube clip or doing it yourself... I hope I don't sound insane :D

It does seem like there is always someone who gets the wheeking started, and in your case it may have been Grover. I know when Sundae was ill and not eating well when she had her abscessed cheek, it was very quiet because Sundae is always the one who starts wheeking and gets Linney going to. Without Sundae winding her up, Linney was much quieter! Hopefully someone else will learn to start the chorus for you soon!
