Lucille
Junior Guinea Pig
I've had the fleece project going for a little while and I wanted to make some observations about fleece. First of all, my piggies seem to love it, it is soft and comfy. I have 4 sows in a 2 story 2x4 grid C&C with plenty of absorbent material (cotton diapers) under the fleece with a waterproof pad under. And although I paid quite a bit for the initial investment in materials, I have enough on hand to never have to buy more so I pay only the electricity for washing and drying and a few cents for laundry soap each week.
When I first decided to switch to fleece from shavings I looked at the gorgeous fleece patterns I saw in many cages. I really admired some of the decorating, and I like the idea of having a nice looking cage. Ultimately I decided to get boring black fleece as the basic bedding and dress up the cage with colorful and patterned accessories.
Four healthy pigs eating all the hay they want plus veg and pellets poop a lot. And I had decided that I only wanted to vacuum out their cage twice a day. No matter what color you have the poops are still there, but I knew myself and I would go crazy looking at a light pink bedding and seeing poops on it.
Same thing with my dogs. I had ordered some white denim slipcovers for the sofa and they looked gorgeous. But every time the dogs jumped up and made themselves comfy I had to deal with cleaning off paw prints. Ultimately the slipcovers came off and comfort won out.
The piggy hair does not show up as much as I had feared on the black fleece, either, plus I bought an attachment for the shop vac that has a brush on it. So for me the boring black fleece was a good choice.
I am not trying to persuade anyone, I'm just saying what is working for me and what is important to me.
