Hello I'm so worry because my baby girl has just fart. At first I saw at her like was that you? And she was kind of startled herself. But should I be worrying about this? I heard her fart yesterday as she walks to come near me and today it happen again. I have just given her veggies. Is this normal or should I run now to the vet? She looks normal and she's actually relaxing just eating her hay* You can see it in the picture I just took her (she ate almost all her veghies as you cam see on the picture). What should I do? Another question I got the flu and I was wondering 20151213_193959.webp20151213_193952.webpif is posible that I could make her sick.

Hi, lve never heard it my self but l have heard a few keeper say there pigs have pumpd ,

ln answere to your second qustion .
lt is said by some gp keepers , that gps can not cach flu and the human cold , but many years ago my x partner had a cold and she
fell asleep on my pig room couch ,
within 36 hours l had lost 4 of my fur babies .
vet autopsied and found evedance of a virol flu type infection !

so if you have a cold , l wouldent risk it :soz:

OMG! Oh god I sleep in the same room as my baby girl is because I don't want her to feel lonely and I had the flu for 2 days now. I'm really scared now. Should I take her to the vet?

Hi , l woundnt be to woried , my x partner was snorting and coffing germems directly towords the cages

lt would be no use taking her to the vets, as there is no defence against the common cold or flu.
the best thing you could do is to feed her a small daily portion of red pepper to fortifie her imune systim (hi in vit C)

Though l would take her out of the bed room :tu:
Thank you very much I'll try that. Today I gave her some orange and she seems to like it I'll try with the red pepper too. And about the farting? Should I be worry about it?

If it was a one off - I wouldn't concern yourself too much . Just like Gizzy said - I haven't heard my guinea pigs pass wind - but I have heard other forum members experience it .

Is she pooping OK? Does her tummy feel soft ?

I am going to tag a health illness guru to discuss windy guinea pigs in more detail

and , about colds/flu ....

This information is from a post written by @Pebble is an recent thread ...

Most human colds are caused by a range of viruses (eg rhinovirus) - which are not transmissible to guinea pigs, Most virl infections tend to be species-specific.

Secondary bacterial infections that accompany a cold (eg when you get sinusitis or bad coughs) "might" be transmisslble and these are what you need to look out for. Bacteria are more able to jump the species barrier to cause infection than viruses because of the differing manner in which they infect the body (they are not reliant on attaching and entering host cells unliike viruses - they are more able to live externally on mucosal surfaces)

Whilst the prospect of guinea pigs contracting a routine human cold virus is low in most circumstances - it does no harm to observe good hygiene when you are suffering - just in case you are brewing "other bugs" associated with colds. ..

l know, it is comonaly thought that thay do not get human colds, but when my 4 died in 36 hours of each other l did some reserch

humidity act largely at the level of the virus particle. For infected guinea pigs housed at 5 °C, the duration of peak shedding was approximately 40 h longer than that of animals housed at 20 °C; this increased sheddin

One of my piggies, Pixel, unleashed a monster pig-fart on my hand not so long ago :)) We both looked at each other in shock and then she just snuggled down looking all smug! I think it's just one of those things :))

Pigs can fart, in fact my Fuzzy woke us up with a loud fart one night when she was in our room. I wouldn't worry unless you notice any other signs that could indicate bloat such as a hollow tummy, lethargy, not eating or pooing. They can get gassy like we do.

I am sorry you have flu, you have my sympathies I had it for a month earlier in the year and have never felt so ill. During that time, my partner did most of the feeding and handling but there were times he had to work so I was just extra careful and made sure I used hand sanitiser before handling them or their food and especially after blowing my nose.

I have not heard of human flu being passed onto pigs, was your vet certain it was the same strain Gizzy and not a type of respiratory infection specific to pigs?

If doesn't matter how ill I am, I have to deal with the guinea pigs and all the pets I care for, as there is only me. I always observe good hygiene and no animal has ever caught anything from me and I've never caught anything from them.

Please make sure that up to 80% of the daily food intake is unlimited fresh hay and that you feed only ca. 50g (ca. 2 ounces) of vegetables daily. That is hopefully going to take care of the farting, which can be caused by a diet that is too high in vegetables. If you are worried or if this continues after any changes to the diet, please see a vet.
Recommendations For A Balanced General Guinea Pig Diet

It is generally VERY rare that guinea pigs catch a human cold or flu virus; so far, we only have got anecdotal evidence. Guinea pig respiratory infections (URI) are bacterial, not viral, and do not transmit to humans. However, whenever you are ill with a flu/cold/digestive bug etc., we recommend to observe good hygiene (i.e. thorough hand washing and if wished using disposable gloves before and after feeding/cleaning) and to refrain from cuddling/lap time during this time. Just use common sense!

You can also not catch any guinea pig skin parasites. These are species specific.

Transmittable between humans and guinea pigs are ringworm (fungal) and salmonella. In these cases, you really need to observe strict hygiene.

Thank you really muchfor your reply. You help me calm myself and today I spend the day around her because I was free from work. And today she hasn't fart at all and she's eating normally, drinking her water and eating her hay. So I'll keep an eye on her but I think she's fine. Thank you all.

And about my cold I went to the doctor today and I'm taking some serious meds so I hope I'll be better in some days. Meanwhile I'll try to be very careful with the cleaning and handling around her. I'll rather take no risk so I always wash my hands when I'm going to fed her and when I'm going to touch her. Thanks for all the comments I really appreciate it

You're right is the same for me no matter how ill I am I have to take care of my guinea pig, my dog and my turtle they depend on me so even if I'm sick I have to fed them and take care of them.

The usual temperature here at Costa Rica is around 26 to 30° C. In the place I live thats the usual temperature. Near the beach is hotter and in the tall mountains is colder but is not that different. So maybe that could help the virus don't spread around that quickly or that it goes away. And tomorrow I'll desinfect my round to kill any possibility of her being sick. I really appreciate your comment and the information you gave me. I'll take a lot of precaution. I don't want to be the reason she gets sick.

l envy you ! we have never had tempretures that hi, :soz:

l have just put the central heating on l am shivering , it is 46f hear in liverpool UK :san:

Jajajaja! Maybe you could use some vacations in a hotter place. :tu:
But I envy you I had never seen snow in my life because Costa Rica is a tropical country. It's never too cold so we never get snow. The colder it could be is like 17° C. And the funny thing is that everybody would be freezing at that temperature. Liverpool must be a beautiful place:nod::nod:
