Hi there.

I wonder if anyone could help me at all. Two weeks ago I bought two GPs', both boys which were 'hutch mates'.

To start with the boys were really friendly and the big one looked after the little one. However, they both will never come out of their hut unless they think I am not in the room. What can I do to bring them out more naturally?
I sit there for ages talking to them and holding out carrots but they just won't come out.

(Although, the big GP will happily lay and jump into my lap if we sit on the couch.)

Secondly but more worryingly, I have let the boys have floor time tonight together and the whole evening the tiny 6week GP has chased and tried to mate with the older GP. The older one, Ted, seems really upset by this. Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Thank you for any help and advice in advance!

Sophie

Hi Sophie,

It'd be great if you could add your location to your profile so we know where about you are as we have members form all over the world. That way we can give advice that is better suited to your situation.

Try having a look at these links but it sound like your young boys are perfectly normal and just learning to adjust to their new home. Mounting each other is part of dominance between piggies, not just for mating and is explained in this thread:
Dominance Behaviours In Guinea Pigs
Boars: A guide to successful companionship.

It can take a while for piggies to settle in a new home and lots of patience. Try talking to them gently whilst sitting by their cage so they get used to you. It takes time for them to build up trust in you but eventually they will come out more and even eat from your hands. Try looking at this thread:
How Do I Settle Shy New Guinea Pigs?

Good luck :)
