Ruby and Dilys are being badly behaved! :police: This last fortnight or so they have been totally obsessed with eating newspaper. They were never bothered by it before. Obviously I'm worried as it probably doesnt do Dil's tummy problems any good. She's has quite a sensitive tum!

In their nero cage they dig down through the hay to get to the newspaper base - to have a good old chew on it! I dont want them to get bunged up or anything.

I have no idea why they have started to do this. Its not boredom - as when the are out having a play they rip up screwed bits of newpaper and cardboard boxes. I just wondered if its a nutritional thing? But they are getting plenty of hay and they supa guinea pellets. I'm giving veg very sparingly at the moment until Dil's poops are back to normal. But she started to eat newspaper weeks before her tummy probs. I would say Dil is probably the worst of the 2. Is it a sign maybe she's finding something painful and rips stuff up in frustration? ?

I'm thinking maybe get rid of newspaper altogether and just use vetbed. But I need to use newspaper in their travel case and to protect the base of their outside run.

I'm just wondering why they have changed. Is it their age (teenagers?!) - they are 18mths old. They never EVER did it before. :-\ (or maybe very rarely!)

Peter Gurney used to say that what stories were in the papers could do more harm than eating them!

Mine go through phases of eating the paper, it really is quite normal and not a sign of them being deficient in anything, just that they fancy doing for a change!

it must be something in the air my piggy is fasinated with it to but only the past week.
even if i put food in his cage he will eat the newspaper from under it?

i have now taken it out of the cage as i was told by a vet not to leave it in there as as it can get stuck at the back of there throats?

Yeah... I read that too. ;) Didnt really mind the odd nibble - like they used to do.

But Dil seems to be eating it rather than any hay (or dry pellets.) and its concerning me a bit :-\ silly girly!

I had to stop using newspaper for Pudsey and Eccles as they were eating it!...lol As I clean them everyday I don't miss using it on their cage it just means a little extra scrubbing!

The Daily Mirror is obviously tasty! :D

I had the andrex piggy she like nothing better than pulling tissues out of a box and throwong them round and any paper shecould find she would eat, including the menu for my step dads Christmas night out, there meals ad to be booked in advance and when asked he had to explain that he had no idea what was on the menu as his daughter guinea pig had eaten it. From what I remember I think the menu probually tasted better any way!

Most of mine rip and shred newspaper on occasion and I'm happy for them to snack on it. My theory is they do it for extra roughage as newspaper is made from plant matter. I've observed something too - pigs with a small amount of hay left in their racks start snacking on their newspaper when they get the munchies. 98) They may also do it for entertainment. Some people prefer not to allow them to eat it due to the ink used on newspapers, but I've never had any problems associated with eating newspaper in any of my pigs (and I have quite a few! :D).

Fingers crossed - at the moment they dont seem to be doing it at all now. They are both quite hormonal at the moment and are more interested in rumbling, popcorning and chasing one another! ;D

They always had a little nibble ...but this little episode took things a bit too far and it was all they were eating... even though they had loads of nice Excel herbage/timothy hay. As I said before I didnt usually mind... but this time it was excessive!

Really dont understand why they were doing it... ?

Peggy would rather eat newspaper or cardboard than food! I try to cover the newspaper with the vetbed completely, to try and stop her doing it so often.

Merlin eats huge big mouthfuls - I try and minimise it but he just loves paper
