Hi

I have a 5 and a half year old guinea pig. A few weeks ago she was given antibiotics as she had diahorrea and just wasn't herself. She seemed to improve massively and was back to her normal self.

However, on Thursday evening I noticed that she was very quiet (but was still eating, drinking and toileting as normal). This continued yesterday and she was sitting a little hunched but was still excited at dinner time and ate normally. Last night, I noticed that her poos had become a little mushy and when she wasn't eating she was just sitting. I did give her a little piece of pear yesterday afternoon and don't know if this would have caused the mushy poos or whether thats a coincidence as she was a little off before I gave it her.

Today she is eating but her poos are still mushy. Its weird because she still doesn't seem fully herself she has mainly been sitting hunched with her fur puffed up but is still getting up occassionally to eat pellets or a little bit of hay and was just sniffing the air and wheeking because she could hear a biscuit packet rustling lol. Shes letting me stroke her and pick her up but has snapped at her cage mate a couple of times when she has got too close. I'm not too sure what to do do you think I need to take her back to the vet or see how she goes? I don't know what had caused it as she hasn't had anything different to eat. The only difference is I've changed their bedding to fleece but I don't think that would give her diahorrea!

She does need to see a vet. Being puffed up can be a sign of being in pain.
In the meantime, weigh her daily to check she is eating enough hay (any weight loss will be due to lack of hay intake). If she is losing weight, then step in with syringe feeding her. Also, keep her off all fresh food (veg, fruit and grass) until her poops normalise (and then for 24 hours afterwards) and just let her eat hay and the normal limited amount of pellets (one tablespoon of pellets per day)

I’ll add in some guides below

Not Eating, Weight Loss And The Importance Of Syringe Feeding Fibre
Complete Syringe Feeding Guide
Digestive Disorders: Diarrhea - Bloat - GI Stasis (No Gut Movement) And Not Eating

Thank you for your advice. I will call the vets in the morning and keep her off veggies tonight.

Do let us know what the vet says
She will likely need to be off veg for several days before her guts rebalances and her poop goes back to normal
