Hi, this is my first post here but I’ve read through a lot of these threads and I need doom advice.

I have a 1.5 year male old guinea pig who has been sick these last couple of weeks. It started with bloating and I was worried so I took him to the emergency room where he was given gabipentin, Meloxicam and Meropitant. The next day I went in for a follow-up and after further testing, he was found to have a urinary infection and was given enrofloxacin (baytril I believe) for two weeks twice a day.

With that antibiotic, he lost appetite and didn’t want his veggies (he loves his bell pepper) but he was still eating his pellets and hay and drinking tons of water.

He’s finished his regiment of antibiotics and his medicine for bloating and is pretty much back to normal in terms of his eating and activity habits. Now though, about a week later since he finished his medicines, he has mushy poop (I’m not sure if it is or isn’t diarrhea) and it smells bad. I’ve read that bene bac (probiotic) and taking away all fresh veggies might help.

I’ve taken away his veggies for two days now and I just gave him the Bene bac for the first time as well as a vitamin c pellet. Should I continue the bene bac? Should I do it more than once a day or less? Or should I take him to the exotic vet?

Other than the poop (pictured below) he doesn’t have any other symptoms. No appetite loss, not lethargic, no sunken eyes, or anything else.

So what should I do?

Hi and welcome. Keep going with the benebac and keep him off veg until his poos have been back to normal for at least 24 hours. When you start him again, try coriander as it’s milder. If it happens again - soft poos - then it will need looking into. Hope your boy is better soon.

If he has already been off veg for two days and his poops haven’t yet normalised, then I would take him back to vet.

Please ensure you weigh him every day so you can be sure he is eating enough hay. You cannot judge hay intake by eye and his daily weight checks are the only way to know he really is getting enough hay.
If he has been losing weight (the baytril can affect their appetite) then you may need to syringe feed him.

Good luck. Hope your piggy improves soon.
