Hey everyone, just need some suggestions! So I currently live in England but in the next few months will be moving to Poland. I have 7 piggies to take with me! Do people suggest by plane or by transport on the ground? And also I’m looking for suggestions on housing for them when I get there. We have a barn standing but I’m afraid in the extreme cold and hot we get over there it’d be too hot in there or too cold. So where would be best to keep them? I’m thinking of building them their own little room almost like a huge shed I’ll keep heated or cool depends on the weather. How do people keep piggies in extreme weather? As I’m quite concerned about it.

Thank you x

How exciting. Good luck with the move. I don’t have experience of travelling with them. Do they live indoors or out at the moment? I think the barn may be ok. It’s got to keep out the drafts and rain in the winter and keep them cool in the summer. But obviously I haven’t seen the barn so you’d have to decide. Heat pads and lots of hay and covers for the hutch in winter. Can they live inside with you?

What an exciting time.

I would suggest taking them with you by car.
Piggies in appropriate carriers tend to travel quite well, and finding an airline that will allow them to travel in the cabin is extremely hard these days.
Sending them as cargo can be stressful, risky and expensive, so driving is definitely the best option even though it will take longer.

As for living in extreme temperatures I live in Switzerland and had originally planned to keep my piggies outside in a specially built, double walled, insulated hutch in a shelter.
However some experimentation showed it was simply impossible to keep them warm enough in the extreme cold (not to mention very hard work with multiple trips outside every day in horrendous weather) and in Summer (which can be very hot here) their hutch got very hot very quickly.
Plus having them outside really minimises any interaction with them in the Winter months as it is just too cold to sit outside with them (even in a shed or shelter) and removing the various hutch covers was not possible for any length of time, otherwise the whole hutch would cool down very quickly.

So basically in a countries that experience extreme temperatures I really don't think it is feasible or fair to keep piggies outside - they really need to be kept inside a properly built and insulated house, where the temperatures are much more stable and easier to control. But that is just my opinion of course.

Thank you a lot :)) they live in my garage, it’s completely cleared just for them so it’s their own room at the moment. So fairly warm in there. Well covered from wind etc. The one in Poland... It’s a very old barn, not worried as far as it being unstable, just more about the heat part. And I’m also worried when it gets to summer it’ll get crazy hot in there xx

Also my grandparents aren’t very accepting of animals like that, I just about managed to convince them to let me take them with me at all! Everyone was convincing me for months to just get rid of them x

No I 100% agree with you. If it was up to me I’d have them inside with me. But my grandparents are very very old fashioned and see them as vermin. As I replied to the first comment I’m lucky they’re accepting them at all unfortunately. I know when I get there and see what I’m working with itd be a lot easier, the barn might actually be a lot better than I remember it xx

My mum is phobic about rats and mice - she will literally scream her head off right in your face and flap her arms about. But she nursed our childhood piggies in her lap as she watched old films on TV. Because they didn't have tails!

I am very honest. But in your shoes I would honestly lie straight through my teeth and say, "Oh, they don't live very long..." to try and get them inside with me. In a rural setting you'd have less chance of attracting long-tailed visitors if they actually were in the house. Hopefully they'll have time to work their charm before your lovely grandparents realise they might be around for a while. I can't even believe I'm saying it but you could perhaps assuage your guilt by offering to pay a rental supplement to 'board' them indoors if you can afford it - it's surprising how often the most adamant 'No' can become a 'Maybe' with a few Euros tacked on!

Wow - this is the naughtiest I've been in years! :woot:
