I'm thinking of moving the piggies outside for the summer, getting a large hutch with a run attached, as the piggies are in my son's bedroom and because of the warmer weather starting it gets very warm in there at times even with the curtain closed.

I am thinking it would be nice for them to be outside, fresh air and plenty more room, is it okay to move them out now?

thanks:))

My pigs are outside now but they were never proper indoor pigs over winter. They live in our conservatory which is warmer than outside but not as warm as indoors.

The issue you have now is the days are lovely yes, but the nights are not. It's quite chilly tonight, I was out sweeping up with a jacket on. For this reason pigs who have lived indoors all the time may not adjust so well.

If you want to move them out, I would get everything ready then wait for a really warm, sunny day with cloud forecast overnight (keeps it warmer). Pop them out ASAP in the morning so they have a nice warm day to get used to the air, wind, etc. At night, cover them up and if it is chilly put some heatpads in and make sure they have LOADS of hay and puffy bedding - shredded paper is very good for this and very insulating.

If I were you I would still give it a few weeks though, especially if the bedroom is hot. Do you have a shed they could go in to help adjust?

Also please remember some of the hutches with runs attached (i.e. a ramp you just lock up at night) are quite nice for Mr Fox...I have never trusted them myself and like something properly solid I can lock up like Fort Knox!

i was thinking about moving my piggies out in the summer, me and my dad are biulding an outside run

Please remember if your pigs will only be in a run, foxes can dig - the live in dens underground!

oh, we were going to build it where are chickans are (oviusly they are going into a different run before we but them in) and we have never had problems with foxes in the nabourhood, but i will take the extra procautions

It is recommended you dig the run down underground for chickens. Or get electric fencing (we have that round the coop at our yard)

If you have ever seen what a fox does to a chicken coop, you would want to. Not nice.

what do you mean underground? I'm not sure if we take any procautions for fozes but i have never seen a fox before or heard about them in my erea

You dig say 2 foot down, then set the wire sides down into the ground. So when Mr Fox digs down he hits wire and hopefully gives up.

You have NEVER seen a fox?! Blimey, come here, loads of the buggers. I spray them with a water pistol, don't want them near my piggies!

no, my big brother told me when we were walking in the woods with my mum that there was a fox and i got really scarred and couldnt go back on my own rolleyes but turns out there was no fox

Well if you were scared, imagine how your chickies or piggies feel when they see them!

Thanks for your reply's:))

Yes, I see what you mean about the chilly nights. The piggies although indoors have been used to colder temperatures because my son's room in the winter has been quite cold as he only has one heater on the wall.

They have been used to fluctuating temperatures for months now.

They will be in a very sheltered spot beteen a wall and a tall hedge at the top of the patio, and bedded on fleece and cozies with hay etc and I also plan to insulate the hutch at night. It will be another couple of weeks yet anyway as I have to buy/setup the hutch etc

I can't have my girls outside because of foxes pow-pow

There's lots of people on here that have their piggies outside, in sheds and big hutches, if you go hunting thru you'll find where a lot of them put heavier covers on at night time for protection from the weather and also unwanted visitors!

I think the idea of digging down a long way.....like Doeylicious suggested.......is a great idea :)

thank you:))

I have decided to get a large, tounge and grooved (5ft x 2ft) or bigger triple hutch or a double (6ft x 2ft)as I have 7 piggies to house seperately, 5 girls and two boys and insulate that at night.

I have decided to buy a seperate run for the day to put on the grass for when it's warm etc tink that would be a good solution
