Hi just asking some advice. I've just moved my guinea pigs inside for the winter they've got a nice big hutch in a hallway. However the hallway is quite dark with the only liking coming from the back door at the end of the hallway. Just wondering if this is bad for the guinea pigs to be in quite a dark place over the winter most of the day ?

It would be nice if they had access to some natural light through the day. Would it be possible to turn the hutch so they have more light to see?

:agr:

but if you can't ...

My opinion : Sometimes, things in life are a compromise and, they'll be much safer indoors and much better in an environment where they are protected from the cold and wet . So ... I think you've made the right choice moving them in .

I'll be interested to hear what other members feel about artificial light - and whether this is different to natural light .

Will you be able to spend much time with them and interact with them ?

Unfortunately not with the size of the hutch and the fact the hallway narrows towards the back door the only place the hutch can go really is the opposite end of the door

Like piggyowner says they're much better off inside and you have to compromise sometimes.

When I lived with my parents my room was a strange shape so it was hard to fit in the C&C and my bed.

The bottom C&C didn't get as much natural light, so I had a lamp that I stood on the floor near the cage, and I used fairy lights on their "ceiling" when I was in, so it wasn't too dark for them.

Yeah I work from home so I'll be able to see them whenever throughout the day, and pick them up every day. If I'm able to weather depending i will put them out when I can aswel.

That's a good idea I'll try and fix up some lighting, so at least they won't be in the dark. Like I say it's not total darkness it's just a dimly lite hallway

Are you in the UK? It might get too cold to put them outside. Perhaps a run somewhere indoors ?
Yeah I am in the U.K. I'll see how cold it gets obviously I won't put them out if it's too cold. I have got a little space they could have a run in inside the house.

Mine are in also in my hall as we have no where else I keep a light on for them I Was The same to be honest it's either that your ousltside in the cold. They don't seem to mind to be honest x

Ah that's what I'll try and do then I'll sort out some sort of lightning to leave on in the day for them.

Thanks

Honestly, my pigs only really get artificial light. They are in the family room, which happens to be in the (finished) basement. I work from home so there is 'daylight' on during the day, as I am in the room typing away and have the lights on. Someone is around most of the day, so there is a pretty good division of light to dark. Honestly, it has never seemed to bother them that they do not get natural sunlight.
