Hi,

Our guinea pig has lived indoors in an indoor cage since we got him in December 2015. However, we will soon be moving house and there is nowhere suitable to keep him in the main house. The house has an integral garage (accessible from the kitchen as well as from outside) but it’s not as warm as the main house as it’s not heated. I know guinea pigs can live outside, which technically this isn’t, but I’m a little concerned about the change in temperature for him, as it will be quite a lot cooler than what he’s used to, especially in the winter. Although not as cool as it would be outside!

Can anyone advise if this is okay?

Thanks in advance.

When will you be moving? You need to acclimatise him to being outside and treat him like a tender plant at first. Will he still be living in the cage? If so I would cover the cage in a blanket or a warm cover of some sort to try and keep a bit of heat in there. You will need lots of fleecy hides and tunnels so that he can keep himself warm. A hay box that he can snuggle into is also a good idea as are snugglesafe heat pads (you heat these in a microwave) which stay warm for hours. Does the garage have a window? Is there enough light in there for him? Remember to clean the out the garage thoroughly to get rid of anything nasty that the previous owner may have kept in there and get rid of any cobwebs and spiders and don't keep your car or motorbike if you have those in there as the fumes aren't very healthy for piggies. Hope this helps.
