Hi all,

Not sure what section to be posting this on but I’m hoping to go off to uni this September however I won’t have anyone to look after Streaky which is really sad!
Does anyone know what I could do? Or if anyone could look after him? I live in Birmingham and will hopefully be going to a seaside university so that means I will have to move away there.
Thanks!

Oh that’s a shame :(

Many moons ago when I left to go to university, I left my rabbit at home for my parents to look after. Is that an option?
My mom works full time and we also have 2 dogs as well so it would be too much to do. I haven’t specifically asked the university if pets aren’t allowed but I’ve read in other forums that they do dorm checks etc, I am tempted to take him along with me as he’ll keep me company and I wouldn’t need to give him away either!

Are you living in halls or a house? Halls didn’t let us have pets but I lived in two houses who let us have pets (not cats or dogs) so long as we asked and paid a small disposit on top.
It’s worth asking though

Could you give Streaky to a good rescue and that way they can ensure he goes to a good home?

There is one on the Rescue Locator in Wallsall.

There’s a new RSPCA shelter near us in Frankley which could be an option too. I know it might sound stupid but would he be well looked-after there? I’m only saying that because I’ve read articles before about the RSPCA and how some animals don’t get the ‘full’ care they need. I know this could be a bunch of lies as well and I’m not slating them in any way as they have helped so many animals.

I’ll be living in halls for my first year and then will be house sharing for the other 2 years. I have thought of ringing them and asking if I could bring Streaky with me but I felt it would sound stupid if I asked lol?

Why is it too much for your mom to take care of him? I also work full time. The guinea pigs stay home all day and get fed twice a day.

If she could feed him twice a day before work and after work, and clean the cage once or twice a week, he would be fine.

I think it's because Streaky gets impaction (mentioned on another thread) and needs help clearing it twice a day. It's not the most pleasant of piggie related tasks, I don't think I'd want to ask my parent to do it if I were the child and I knew my parent wasn't particularly into piggies.

@Streaky , how old is Streaky pig and do you know if he is a dominant or submissive sort of boar?

I'd be inclined to think that unis wouldn't allow pet guinea pigs at all, as their cages take up quite a bit of space and they do create mess with the hay etc.
When I was at uni 30 years ago pets weren't allowed, a friend of mine got away with acquiring a goldfish in a bowl, but that could be hidden behind the curtain or her books so cleaners etc couldn't see it. Hall rooms weren't - and I imagine still aren't - big, so a piggie cage would be a significant taker-up of space.

That's a good point @Qualcast&Flymo. When my sons were at Uni the rooms in Halls had a bed in, a wardrobe, a desk, a chest of drawers and about enough room to walk between the bed and the desk if you were about as big as a gnat!

If you ask they may say yes. You don't know til you ask.
absolutely!

That’s exactly the reason @Qualcast&Flymo, it can be messy and smelly sometimes. He’s 5 years old now so he is getting on (bless him). When his brother was alive a few years ago it seemed like Streaky was the submissive pig but at times he did show he could be dominant too (e.g snatching food off his brother lol). It’s hard because he is getting older and I just want him to have the best life possible with as much snuggles, food and play time, he’s like my child as I’ve had him since I was 13 so I have such a great bond with him.

Hi. this is a sad situtation and a heartbreaking one. it's clear you love Streaky and love to see him happy in his life. He also loves you and what's the solution.
I guess you know that mum can't take him as she works and dogs.
Ideal world be someone you know and trust who will take of him allowing you to visit and he enjoy seeing you. their is of course his age and if he gets poorly with age vet bills
etc.
I hope someone on here could foster the little guy and you know he be looked after. RSPCA I can only speak about my local one and bless them they try but piggies are not top their list. It's common that nearly 50% of animals they get are PTS.
How about a rescue centre where you can visit and perhaps donate £ few a week to know he's ok.
Wish you all the best dont give up. xx

When I was at uni... years ago & I lived in halls we weren’t allowed pets & we did get room checks every so often too.
I’ll tag in @Tim as he lives in your area & might know more rescues/ places etc...
I’m sorry I can’t offer to help lovely little Streaky I would if I could x

Thank you for your help and advice! I may see if anyone is looking for a guinea pig on here for their guinea pig(s). I assume I’d just put a thread up about it? But if not, then I’ll definitely look at rescue centres as I know some be specific for Guineas. I do still have about 3 months until September and will have to wait until results day in August to see if I’ve got in but it’s best to still have a back up plan for Streaky. I’d love to just stay and look after him forever ahah!
Thanks again! And I’ll keep you updated! xx

Awh no worries but thank you! X

I would love to look after your Streaky, but sadly we do not have the space long term. Sorry :soz: I second @Flutterby ’s suggestion of the potteries. I’ll be going there soon, so if you come to an arrangement and they can help, I’ll be happy to help with transport :)

I asked earlier about Streaky because I'm looking for a friend for my boar (Squeaks), who's been on his own for 3 months. However, I do need to find him a friend asap as he's been on his own so long rather than wait till September, and as he is very dominant I need to find him a submissive boar-friend (he hasn't liked any of those he's been tried with so far!). If @worried val of york or someone else here can help you, they may be a better bet, but if not the possibility of trying them together is there.

@Qualcast&Flymo Thank you for your offer and help. I’ve found him a home to stay, sorry about the delay in response as well and I really hope you find Squeaks a friend soon!

I think my replies haven’t been tagged to the people they were for sorry for the confusion ahh!

Hi!
Sorry about the delay in response! But I have found him a home with another guinea pig! Thank you for your help and advice, without everyone who commented I wouldn’t have found a home for him. A huge weight has been lifted! phew!

That's good news @Streaky you must be relieved!
