Hi, I wanted to see if anyone have ever come across this issue before or if i am over panicking about a situation that needs a little more time. I noticed my pig was not eating Friday evening even though she wanted to and did that morning, but she just would not put anything in her mouth and would pull a face. She was still running around the house as per normal though. I gave her some recovery food and took her to the vets first thing Saturday as she still was not eating (though very eager for food and screaming at me for it). The vet said her teeth looked fine but she could see something stuck in the roof of her mouth so gave her a little gas to calm her and managed to get it out. It is a splinter sized piece of hay that cannot be bent it is that tough, though it kind of looks like the bits of hay that are stuck to the edible houses. She was given metacam and emeprid and seems fine now, but even today will still not eat. She doesn't pull a face anymore though.

I am continuing to feed her the recovery food, and she is active and very angry at me for it, but i have still not seen her go to the toilet since yesterday and while she will pick up food with her front teeth she will then spit it out. I assumed that she would be ready to eat with it gone from her mouth but maybe she is still too sore? Her stomach is not hard, though i cannot here any movement and i would have expected her to have pass something now with the recovery and emeprid.

I will be taking her back to the vets for checkup/xray to be sure, and she has metacam as well for any remaining pain. Has anyone else ever had a similar situation where it does not seem to be dental but gums instead?

I’ve not had experience with this. But it may be she’s still sore. Hopefully the metacam will help. If her hay input lessened then that’s why she’s not pooping. Poo output is 1-2 days behind. Keep going with the recovery food. You’re aiming for 60ml in a 24 hour period. She may not like it but needs must. I would also switch to weighing once daily at the same time (preferably morning) and adjust accordingly. You’re aiming for her to at least maintain. Hope she starts feeling better soon.

Hello and welcome. That must of been so painful for her. Well done for getting her seen so quickly. Hopefully the painkillers will kick in soon and she will be able to eat on her own. It’s good that she is still interested in food. Take her back if you don’t see an improvement soon.

Thank you both, I’ve managed to get about 50-55ml in her today, though she now seems very full and doesn’t really want to jump that much. Still happy to run away then minute I look to pick her up though and She has peed a lot on me so fingers crossed. I forgot it was bank holiday tomorrow but if she’s not showing signs of improvement in the afternoon I’ll just take the call out fee.
