Is This Squabbling Or A Sign The Bond Isn't Going To Work Out?

On this thread I shared a picture of Mo's ear that had a white spot on it because I wondered if the pairs squabbling had anything to do with it.I'm happy to say both boars are still together (still the odd squabble though!)

Now you all advised to book a vet appointment as it could be fungal and the earliest appointment I could get (with Vets I trust anyway lol) was this next week. Now the thing on his ear hasn't spread but it looks almost scabbish? I'm posting a picture. Now I'm still going to the vet but is that what happens if it's fungal? He's having a bum bath today (and Steve haha) and I'm going to bath the ear in salt water.

Couple of questions about going to the vet:
1- how should I expect a vet to look for fungal?

2- what sort of medicine etc should I expect a vet to suggest?

3- I would also like a general M.O.T of him - what is a general checkup? Does it include looking in their mouth? Last time I went they didn't look in the mouth.

4- I want to take Steve for comfort but is this a bad idea? The carrier is supposed to be for a cat so I know it's big enough for both of them but I don't want a fight to break out.

Thanks for your help guys I will post picture of ear now

This is his clean ear compared to the one with the thing. Is this brought on by something I've done? I've noticed no excessive scratching or anything and Steve is still clear- was thinking of separating them if it's fungal but Steve had already been with him and I feel there's no point in separating now. X

It still looks like fungal to me. Please be aware that there a lot more fungal infections than just ringworm that are much less aggressive and infective. ;)

Phew thanks for your quick response - I did the dreaded Google search and ringworm kept popping up- the pictures were awful poor things!

Do you agree with taking Steve with Mo or not? X

Yes, you can take both. If it is infectious, he's already likely caught it (the time between infection and outbreak is about 10-14 days) and it is a lot less stressful for them if they can stay together.

Just use good commonsense hygiene with thorough hand washing etc.

Here is our ringworm care guide: Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures
If it is ringworm, oral medication (itrafungol) is easiest and most efficient, especially in a difficult to treat area like the ear. With milder fungal, you may get away with creaming.

Many thanks - Mo definitely is getting me used to all the piggy ailments lol!

When I took my boars for a general check up recently they had their teeth checked along with breathing, hearts, boar bits, skin, nails, eyes - I've probably forgotten something! Yes I would take Steve as well. If you are going by car and you are worried about them fighting in the carrier take a spare box just in case you need to seperate (a cardboard box will do if you don't have a 2nd carrier). I find when taking mine to the vets they are very quiet in the carrier and huddle together as they are nervous of the experience and like to have each other for company.

Ah thanks for that- last time I saw a vet they felt him, looked in his ears and listened to his heart but didn't look at his bits or mouth and I payed £50! Hmmmm I'll definitely check they do this time. The vets isn't too far (20 minutes by car) so I think they will be ok- as you've put its a new experience well for Steve anyway...I'll just out lots of hay in. The spare box idea is great I'll do that! X

Ears, I knew I'd forgotten something. I had a General Wellness Check my vets call it and it was £38 each, I had them all done at once. The really annoying thing is Dogs, Cats and Rabbits get their initial check free as a welcome to the practise, but not guineas. I guess it's because they need the exotic vets and they are more expensive?
