Elizabeth was checked for ovarian cysts via ultrasound when she had her bleeding episode in December and nothing was found. She had a slight crusty nipple but the vet wasn’t concerned.
I picked her up today and both her nipples are slightly crusty. Not bad and I have removed the crust gently with an ear bud and warm water and it came off easily but should I be concerned? Can guinea pigs have crusty nipples and not have ovarian cysts? Could it have been dried on dirt and not crust at all!
She’s back at the vets on Thursday so I can mention it then if needed but I’m really stressing out what with her big fatty lump and now this 😞

So sorry Claire your having such a difficult time at the moment.
Sending Elizabeth healing vibes and sending you both hugs xx

Just thought I would update, it’s over 4 months later and Elizabeth still has slight crusty nipples. If she had ovarian cysts that were cause for concern, would she be displaying more symptoms by now?

Elizabeth has had quite a few vet visits in the last 4 months for various things (not ovarian cyst related) and the vet has never been concerned

I’ve never had sows so can’t really comment. Hopefully it’s nothing as a vet would have picked it up by now ?

It might be worth having a second ultrasound to be sure, if she has/had cysts they may have ruptured before the first ultrasound.

Personally I opt for surgery the second there's a hint they might have cysts, before they become too old or otherwise not suitable for surgery. I currently have 8 year old Tilly who has them and there's not really anything I can do for her but keep her comfortable and hope if they rupture they don't cause sepsis or anything too nasty.

Meanwhile I've got Poppet recovering from her spay, who had a small cyst each side, her only symptom was crusty nipples before the vet could feel one of her cysts, Bailey is booked to be done on the 11th and she also only has crusty nipples, nothing was felt but at almost 5 I'd rather spay her now than wait and see. Fern is going in to be done at the same time as she has been rumbling and mounting everyone daily for weeks now.

But that's only really possible because I have a vet I trust is an excellent surgeon, obviously for most people opting for surgery is a much bigger decision!

Thank you, Elizabeth is at the vets next Monday for an unrelated issue so I’ll mention it. She’s around 5 so I’m worried about having her spayed. I changed my vet last December to the new vet who I have a lot more confidence in but it still worries me

Just cleaned Elizabeth’s nipples with coconut oil and the crust came away easily. Now I’m not sure whether it was just dirt as I haven’t cleaned her nipples since the last crusty nipple incident in April. The base of her nipples are brown coloured. What colour would crust from ovarian cysts be? The stuff that came off her was a browny colour. Sorry, I’m just stressing out again 😞
