I have always used fleece for my girls(about 3 months now). All of a sudden the fleeces don't seem to be absorbing the liquid, it keeps staying on the top.

I was looking to get some other fleeces today and some were made from acrylic(same as what i've got) and others were polyester.
My question is am i supposed to be buying 100% polyester instead of acylic?

They were working fine at the start but i have had to change the fleece 3 times this week due to it getting so wet. I use towels and newpapers underneath.

Am i doing something wrong?

I fold the towel so effectively its about 2 layers of towels and then lots of layers of newpaper. I just don't get why suddenly its not working as it should?

They are not new i have used them for about 3 months and they were working fine but suddenly they are not letting the liquid through.
Would someone be able to check for me what there fleece is made from? is it polyester or acrylic?

My fleeces are all made from polyester.

Have you by any change incidentially added softener?

have you used softner? this can cause the fleece to stop the wee from penetrating

:( Hmmm the only thing I can think of would be fabric softner, but if your mum hasn't been using that, then I'm at a loss.

What order do you put the layers? Is it newspaper, towels, fleece or towels, newspaper, fleece? Maybe that has an effect?

I do newspapers, towels then fleece. Is that wrong?
My mum has said to me she always double checks not to use softener, so i don't think it can be that.

No its not wrong, thats the order I would have done it, although when I used towels and fleece I never used newspaper as well. But I would assume it is just another layer to absorb.

I did find that fleece did get wet when I was changing it (twice a week) but I've since swapped the towels for inco pads and don't have the problem now (change once a week). The pads are damp in the heavy usage areas, but the fleece isn't.

Hope you can figure it out!

I'm gonna check it later and see if its wet again or not. If it is I'm stuck as all my fleeces are in the wash as i've had to use so many recently.
Thanks for the help anyway :)

I have found I need to wash the washing machine drawer in warm water before I wash the piggy bedding as you will find that fabric softner sticks to the inside of the drawer. I bet if you run your fingers along the fabric softner part of the drawer it will feel all slippery. I also tend to wash my bedding and towels before I wash the piggy stuff as I don't use fabric softner in those either and so the machine has been rinsed out well before i start on there stuff. Also have you checked that she isn;t using fabric softner in with the towels? They *** not absorb the wee if she is

Well we have the cheap £2 fleeces from Asda with a thick layer of newspaper underneath. It's always dry as long as it's changed once a week so I don't think cost matters. We do have carefresh in a litter tray & they tend to pee in there saving the fleece heavy wetting. Have * checked the water bottle?

The water bottle does leak a bit but when the fleece is wet, it is wet all over not just near the bottle. I guess it might be that and it might be what redfrock suggested.
I'm thinking about switching to Megazorb if it continues being wet.

Just wondering if you've changed the washing detergent you use? I don't know but it could be that some have added conditioning agents which might affect how well the fleece wicks? Just a thought...

In your first post you said you used acrylic fleeces, then in another you said they are polyester! I have heard that polyester are the better ones to use. And also that you need to wash them at high temperatures.

I can't offer much advice as I dont use them! All the best though, I hope you solve the problem!

I have heard that polyester are the better ones to use. And also that you need to wash them at high temperatures.

Haven't been using fleece very long myself (2 months) but I've been using polyester fleece (some cheap, some more expensive) with towels underneath and so far so good.

I've never heard that hot temperatures are recommended, unless your piggy has mites etc of course, but have heard people recommend using non-bio detergent. Not sure if biological detergent affects the "wickability" of fleece though, it's perhaps more to do with non-bio being more gentle and kinder to piggies' sensitive skin and noses?

If your problems are due to switching detergent then perhaps it might be worth trying to wash one of the 'problem' fleeces a couple of times with just water and no detergent, to see if that might get any remaining detergent and conditioning agents out and then try washing with a detergent which you know you've used before without problem. If the fleece then wicks ok then I'd stick to that particular detergent. I've even heard of some people washing with things like white vinegar, soda crystals etc, which may work well to refresh the fleeces back to their original state, but I have no idea how you'd go about that!

Anyway I have no idea if it'll work but may be worth a try to save you wasting your fleeces? Good luck! :)

What i said was that some fleeces i was thinking of buying were acrylic and i thought they were the same as what i already had but infact they were different.
The fleeces i have are polyester.
